BREATHING FASHION TURNS 7

Last year when we turned six I was still in shock that Breathing Fashion is still here. Now we’re turning 7 and I’m STILL in shock. WOW. It’s been over half a decade with this site and I still love it. I started Breathing Fashion as a way to cultivate my voice in fashion journalism- it started as a platform share my own content in hopes that I eventually would be writing for other sites and magazines. And guess what fam- WE MADE IT. unspecifiedI’m writing for some of my favorite  sites and I get to write about feminist things and witchy things! I’m also now based in LA as I intern in the PR department of Vivienne Westwood. I just booked my first real styling shoot for a cool California based magazine and I have some fun pieces I’m working on. I’m still overwhelmed at life and you know, the fact that people actually care enough about what I have to say to read it. My fabulous twin Alexandra accompanied me to check another big thing off my bucket list- driving the Angeles Crest highway. Also referred to as Donnie Darko highway by the twin and I- Angeles Crest is where the Carpathian Ridge scenes of Donnie Darko were filmed. Unfortunately we only drove a few of the 66 mile highway, which goes through the San Gabriel Mountains (ha!) but driving the whole thing is another item on the bucket list. The view was overwhelming and beautiful and honestly just magical and majestic. Although I have a fear of heights, I was able to deal because Alex was driving and Donnie Darko, duh. And yes- I cried and played the soundtrack the whole time. unspecified-1 I’m going to do my best to have a real birthday post, but for now I think these will do. I’m wearing a vintage skirt I found at Goodwill with Ivory and some new shades I got here in LA. I’m so humbled by all the love you guys give me. I’m doing my best to make this even better.

AMERICA THE BOOTIFUL

CmfDkXmWcAAp3zA.jpg-largeHey folks. I hope you’re spending time celebrating and drinking safely with your loved ones. It’s a hot one in Columbia, South Carolina and I’m currently sitting on my porch listening to Citizen while a car alarm goes off in the distance. I just spent time outside in the pool, drinking mimosas and basking in the New Moon vibes. The New Moon is in Cancer, asking us to revisit patterns//relationships relating to our emotional well being. Feel your feeling aka super emotional time.Today’s the one day a year I wear the American flag and put my hair in victory rolls. It’s the first time I’ve done this look and I’m feeling it. Anyway- Happy American Day guys. Be thankful of your privilege, recognize what today actually celebrates and help make a better tomorrow.13557804_10153537242666207_1042984770385121713_n 13438887_10153537435806207_1839763534167574790_n Resized_20160704_153529(0)Bathing suit from Forgotten Feather Vintage.13592296_10153537435816207_4510175897760735494_nKeep America boo-tiful (and bootyfull) inside and out fam.

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN YOU’RE OBNOXIOUSLY HUNGOVER

Sometimes it happens. You don’t eat enough, you go too hard, and you wake up feeling like death incarnate the next morning. We’ve all been there- hangovers are a part of life, for the most of us, after all. And even when you puke in the bathroom of your favorite brunch place (aka me last Saturday) it always helps to at least look decent. I never thought I would be the sort of girl who bought a baseball cap but I had a moment of weakness at Urban Outfitters and had to buy it. I think sober me was looking out for hungover me because let me tell you- it’s an easy way to look put together when you don’t feel it.

I paired this cap with a vintage slip dress from Ivory at Forgotten Feather, a cut out bra from Urban Outfitters, my favorite bucket bag from Zara and loafers from Target.

If you want to steal my look- go for it. Click below to shop! And don’t forget- if you drink, be smart, don’t drive and know your limits! it’s okay to be hungover. Just drink water, look cute and let your body rest.

An Ode

An ode to exploring. An ode to creating. An ode to the little things like warm days and to listening to the rainfall and painting what you hear. An ode to situations that you made the best of and the people you’ve met along the way. An ode to vintage shops and high waisted shorts, bananas and friends that think the same. An ode to yoga, an ode to ballet, a sonnet to poetry and words loved and laid down again.  An ode to college, an ode to Bree, an ode to the these photos she took of me!

_MG_1730Any day I can get brunch and model with Bree is a good day. Yesterday was absolutely lovely outside, the sun was warm on my skin and there was the softest breeze. It wasn’t too hot, it wasn’t cold and I didn’t even have to wear my sweater. Taking these photos was the ultimate celebration of freedom- that I’m done with college! The fact that one of my favorite people took them makes it even better. My time at The Univesity of South Carolina has had its ups and downs, but I’m so thankful for the years I’ve spent here. I’ll go into more detail about my experiences a bit later, but for now I’m excited to share these photos. _MG_1793_MG_1812This is also my ~official~ contributor photo for Nylon!  Check it out! _MG_1781Shirt and sunglasses:: Urban Outfitters/ Shorts:: Hip Wa Zee/ Boots:: H&M/ Bandana:: Vintage_MG_1847_2All photos by my amazing friend Bree Burchfield.

Queen of Hearts::: Forgotten Feather Valentines Day Lookbook

I’m disgustingly lucky to be surrounded by ridiculously creative and talented humans. Seriously. Last week I spent  my Sunday dressing up in Ivory’s vintage lingerie with my two best friends and my twin for this super special Valentines Day lookbook. We rearranged my room and got into character- we were going for a mixed era, vintage-esque look. Ivory recently launched an entire collection of this incredible lingerie, which was shot by my sister and styled by Ivory with some help from yours truly. Spending the day with my favorite humans, some fresh flowers and some rosé wasn’t too shabby.

So, do you actually need an excuse to buy yourself some lingerie? Absolutely not. You are your best excuse, and if you have a significant other who will appreciate vintage lingerie, then that’s just a lovely plus. But here’s the thing. If you’re ever upset or sad or if you ever forget that you’re a bad bitch, throw on some vintage lingerie and cheer yourself up. Making yourself feel good is important- and there’s nothing wrong with draping yourself in some silky threads to do it. Have a party for yourself- celebrate everything that makes you, you- wear something that makes you feel like a goddess. Valentines Day is just a wonderful excuse to love yourself, your girlfriends and everyone who loves you as much as YOU love you.

Psychedelic Dreams and Sunny Days

Sometimes things are rough, sometimes you end up feeling like you’re in a Woodstock nirvana. Although this December has been unseasonably warm (and people still don’t believe in climate change!), Ivory and I used it to our advantage the other day when we decided to team up with my sister and make some magic.  We found inspiration in photos of face paint from Woodstock and decided the best route to take was to dress up in some 70’s garb, grab some flowers and take photos. The sun was warm and kissing along our cheeks, and there was the slightest breeze. There was one point where I was posing, eyes closed, breathing in the winter air and just felt it. Bliss. Have you ever felt like universe is just cradling you in its palm? That’s what it felt like.  1I think my favorite part about these photos is that they ended up looking like engagement photos or Ivory and I.  Although she’s my best friend and not my fiance, I am so beyond grateful for this beaut. She is just as ethereal on the inside as she is on the outside, and she has such a gift for finding vintage clothing and giving it a new life, I mean, look at these pieces! The icing on the cake was that my friend Cory tagged along and that Alexandra took these photos. So thankful for weirdos who get me. 3 467812131816171514 Vintage dress and slip (on Ivory) and jumpsuit (on me) : Forgotten Feather Vintage/ Necklace (on Ivory): Fossil and Hide / Poncho: Thrifted Sisters/ Shoes: Free People

GIRLS

Breathing Fashion and Forgotten Feather Vintage bring you GIRLS.a

Sneak into the school bathroom with your best friend, ignoring the teachers who tell you that what you’re wearing isn’t up to par. You were never meant to follow their rules anyway.  So you enter the world of girls, transported back to a time and place where things didn’t make any more sense then they do know (but everything was better). Wear your cardigan with pride or irony, you’re best suited for both anyway. You pass notes and smiles, and laugh when you’re told to go and change. You’re far removed and isolated, lost in a time warp from decades ago, feeding in abandoned bathrooms with sisters of different blood. 12labifecb3ikabmnop

Greyer Gardens

If there’s a secret to having a happy life, it’s definitely to surround yourself with friends just as strange and unusual as you are. Mornings spent draped in vintage lingerie with stacks of costume rings, stickers on your face, best friends, and iced coffee may be far and few between, but they’re some of my favorites. Finding people like Ivory is a blessing- finding a souls who are always down to take photos and put on green glitter eyeshadow are the kind of people you hold onto. Ivory and I saw these rings and knew that we had to go all out- white fur, crazy jewel tone makeup and loads of sweet vintage. The twin, Alexandra, took the photos, which were so much fun to shoot. We didn’t realize we were unintentionally channeling Grey Gardens until Alex pointed it out- we weren’t mad about it. 121203 10 8 6 511161514132223 Happy Sunday.

FEELING YRSELF

Guys it’s happened. For the first time in my 21 years of existence I’m feelin myself- completely and utterly without any damn guilt. I’ve had this sense of peace with who I am, where I am and where I’m going and that feels good! A big part of this, for me, is that for the first time I love what I’m wearing. I feel like my clothing is a conscious and visual manifestation of my soul; I feel aligned. I like to think of this as enlightened personal style, soul style if you will; a non-verbal, purely aesthetic representation of the beauty your soul feels from all the high vibe living it’s doing in this life. In my case, this means a freshly shaved head, some good lipstick, a lot of black, something slightly unexpected and a tad of something sultry. In today’s post this also means something outside of my comfort zone- color. 1Okay so deep green may not be a shocking color, or anything explicit, but for this gal (who feels wholly herself in head-to-toe black) it’s a step and it shall be noted. I saw this top and immediately gravitated toward the slight side boob silhouette and the folky pattern. This top reminds me of the Celts, of folklore, of the faeries. When I realized this shirt fit perfectly, I had no choice- I was in and I had to buy it. I paired the look with the most amazing and probably most important piece of jewelry I have ever received. My lovely Ivory found was telling me all about this magnifying glass necklace she had found at the flea market and I knew I had to have it. I even asked her to hold on to any Aquarius coins she found so I could pair it with the necklace. That night she got home and sent me a photo- she had an Aquarius coin and hadn’t realized it. Synchronicity anyone?? The next day she gave me this necklace- the most beautiful, yellow gold, perfect looking magnifying glass with the trusty coin right beside it. I definitely cried- it’s like a friendship horcrux, when you do something so out of love that you give your friends a little piece of your soul so they’ll always have you with them.  2I paired this top with my only pair of black jeans from Topshop (which I am obsessed with). my trusty fuzzy sweater and some clog like sandals. I was going for space alien 70’s chic. 11 10 9 8 7 4Shirt and shoes: Urban Outfitters// Pants: Topshop// Necklace: Forgotten Feather Vintage5What’s your soul style?

Ill Tell Ya What I Want (Fall/Winter 2015)

Remember how I said I love fall and that I always daydream about what I want to buy and wear? If not, don’t fear. I’m currently reminding you of that and also including some things I’ve been obsessing over and lusting for in equal parts. Here are my top five items I want to wear forever and always this fall. Don’t wait up.

WHAT I WANTLet me just tell you, nothing makes me feel fancier than imagining three cocktail rings on each finger, stacked up, reading some tarot cards or sipping a gin and tonic. I was all about the stacked bands last year but then I remembered how easily I lose rings and how subtlety isn’t my strong suit. Touche. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing more fabulous, and slightly gaudy, than stacks and stacks of blinged out costume jewlery, an all black outfit and some lipstick to match the rings. Add some really long fake nails, a lot of attitude and you got it, girl.

Some crazy accents liek stacked soles, or gold cap tips have me spinning. Oversized oxfords with a giant tassel? Chunky black brogues?! Yes please- gothic chic, anyone?

Perhaps it’s because I’ve been collecting some neat pins and been sewing some patches but I finally turned; I am a fan of the denim jacket. Okay OKAY I know I said it would never happen, but a girl can only stick to her high (sartorial) horse for so long, right?! I posted about the vintage denim jacket a friends mom gave to me and I don’t regret it. I love my denim jacket, but I want more! My favorite fall outerwear staple, however, is the leather jacket- preferably vegan and vintage. I’ve been craving a soft, leathery jacket in addition to my structured studded one. I just finished Viv Albertine’s book and I’m waiting for my copy of a book on Vivienne Westwood- it’s clear who inspires my leather love.

lingerie

I’ve gushed over my love of lace, and vintage, lingerie before and I will do it again. I love it. I love the delicate detailing and the sweet touch of beautiful lingerie on my skin. And I love how it looks! I had a lot of trouble embracing my A-cups (here’s to you mom and dad, again), but now I see them as a perfect excuse to wear the prettiest lingerie possible. Add some harness details, lots of mesh and cutouts an delicate straps and you’ve got my weak at the knees. I love layering bras like these under cardigans, and leaving a few buttons unbuttoned. These pieces look equally as good under men’s button downs worn as dreses. Oh and they look fabulous on their own. Win win, in my book. vintageLife cheat for amazing vintage lingerie. Become best friends with someone who has a knack for finding it and owns her own Etsy. My pick is my darling Ivory Woods and her shop Forgotten Feather. Also the store I work at in Columbia, Hip Wa Zee, always has plenty of good finds.

what i need need need

Another recent obsession, again thanks to my dear Ivory, are vintage bolo ties. Something I never really knew about until a teachers father came to speak to my class when I was in 7th or 8th grade. I remember liking his bolo tie, but it wasn’t until the past few months that I’ve gotten into them. I haven’t really been into big jewelry as of late, but a bolo tie feels a good mix of masculine and feminine elements. I love that you can ajdust em to, convenience is key. I want to find some with crystals instead of pendants- yum. Last First Day of School3I wore a bolo tie to my last first day of classes EVER. 16th grade deserved to be sent off in style. What are you wearing this Fall?
