Breathing Fashion X Victoria Secret Pink USC

I think that there are certain people, things and experiences that are meant to come into our lives; whether they’re meant to shape us, help us grow and teach us, there’s a reason they show up. Yoga is one of those things for me. Yoga is the counterpart to my love for fashion; it addresses who I am inside, while my love for style addresses that in a physical way.1516 Interestingly enough, I don’t really think about what I wear to yoga, it’s the one time during the day that I don’t care how I look. I tend to buy my yoga clothes from TJ Maxx since they have really great, inexpensive active wear. I like colorful sports bras, black yoga leggings and soft, dreamy pullovers. I don’t spend much time thinking about how I look which is refreshing. Sometimes, however, I have to go somewhere after class and I don’t have time to grab extra clothes or change. For those moments, I like to make sure I look halfway decent.14Thanks to PINK by Victoria’s Secret here at University of South Carolina, I’ve just received my new favorite yoga pants. I’m not even going to deny that I love fitted yoga leggings because they show off my butt and do their job while doing so. This is tricky territory if, like me, you wear your yoga leggings to yoga and not around; they have to hug you in the right places and they definitely have to be thick enough. I’ve worn super cute leggings to class and felt like death because they’re not stretchy or aren’t breathable and I’ve worn leggings that are too big and gap way too much in the back. The Ultimate Yoga Legging are the perfect fabric; they breathe, they’re stretchy, they don’t lose their fit throughout class as you sweat. For someone who doesn’t spend a lot on their yoga clothes, I’ll definitely be investing in more of these pants. They’re comfy, they’re adorable and they make your butt look good. I hate being in public in my yoga clothes, but when I wear these babies, I don’t mind at all. 111128910 7 5 4 3 26I tried the leggings out and they’re  perfect. Thank you so much to PINK at USC for letting me play around and feel awesome while doing it. Follow them on Instagram and Twitter for giveaways and updates!

Thanks to my twin, Alexandra, for the photos, find her on Instagram for some cool photos. 13

PS guys- yoga isn’t about being perfect, or achieving perfection in a pose. You have your entire life to work on yoga; the asanas, or physical postures, are just one of the eight limbs of yoga. I know that I’m not “perfect” in any of these postures. I think it’s a good reminder to let go of ego when you see a pose you’re not perfect in.

Five Reasons Every Man Should Practice Yoga

Just like it’s no new fact that I love wearing black, it’s no new fact that I love yoga. One of my long term goals includes being a yoga teacher, and another includes traveling to India to deepen my practice, immerse myself in the culture and hopefully volunteer as well. So, this Monday morning, I am giving every Death King out there five reasons why he should practice yoga. These five reasons are nothing more than just the tip of the iceberg, but we all have to start somewhere!

1. Because you are NOT flexible

I love this meme because it’s so accurate. The wonderful thing about yoga is that it HELPS with flexibility. You don’t have to be able to touch the your toes or put your foot behind your head, but who knows, maybe after a steady practice those things will happen! Yoga couples alignment, stretching, breath and philosophy to create flexibility in your mind, body and soul. Believe me, you’ll be sore after your first yoga class, but it will be well worth it.

2. Because it will Help you Breathe

Well, that doesn’t necessarily sound so promising, we’re constantly breathing after all, but let me explain. There are many, many different schools of yoga, but almost every one emphasizes the breath. Different breathing patterns, called pranayama’s, help you in different ways; some calm, some energize, some just help to restore. The most common breathing technique is called ujjayi or ocean breadth and it helps to center and restore and is used in many yoga classes. The breadth is performed by tensing the muscles at the back of the throat and breathing out through the nose, like you’re fogging up a mirror. Paying attention to your breath automatically helps turn your drishti, or gaze, inward; there is stillness and softness that wasn’t present before. By paying attention to the breath while performing the physical postures, a sort of consciousnesses is able to manifest, and there’s a presence that wasn’t there before. This, in turn, carries of the mat and is something you can utilize everyday. Your practice on the mat is a reflection of your life off the mat, after all .

3. Because Your Man Butt will Look Really Really Good

Your butt will look great, your body will start to look great, and you’ll feel good. Personally, I love a man with a nice butt, and yoga will definitely give you a nice butt… Yoga means union, and there’s an obvious connection between a happy mind and happy body and soul. The idea behind the series of physical postures, or asanas, is that when the body is active, the mind is quite. The original yogis knew the opposite was true as well; when the body is quite the mind is active. Yoga uses the energetic body and the physical body to strengthen one another; the whole idea of a physical yoga practice is to get your body ready for meditation, or savasana. Don’t be fooled though; a vinyasa style class is no easy feat, it will metaphorically kick your butt, but alas, it will also physically tone it along with the rest of your body.

4. Because There is a Yoga Class for Everyone

Whether you want a physically engaging class or a restoring one, there is a school of yoga for everyone. Love structure and want a class that is like meditation in motion? Try Ashtanga, a school that has a set of series and involves the same postures in almost every class. After  you become familiar with the postures and terminology it becomes moving meditation guided by the breath. Want a yoga practice based around the concept of alignment? Try Iyengar or Anusara. Want a faster paced yoga class that flows from one posture to the next? Try a Vinyasa class. There is something for everyone, find more information about what resonates with you HERE.

5. Because Yoga is a Spiritual Practice with Physical Benefits, and Not the Other Way Around

The thing with yoga is that YES, it will help tone your inner thighs, shape up your butt, strengthen your back and core, it will help you gain arm muscles and have better postures… those are all true.  But the practice of yoga, when done with integrity, is a lifelong practice that follows you. The physical practice is 1/6th of yoga.. it is only one measly limb. Yoga is one of the most incredible gifts you can give yourself because it will help you to dwell in your soul in a way you didn’t know was possible. I think it’s incredibly attractive when a man takes care of himself, physically and spirituality, and having witnessed the benefits of yoga firsthand, I urge everyone to start a practice and see the benefits themselves. It takes a true man to understand the importance of taking care of himself, and let me tell you, yoga is an amazing way to do it.

I urge everyone, male or female, to get on a mat and see how it changes you. Yoga has many, many more benefits than I was able to list, but I hope I gave you an idea of how much positive change it’s capable of.

PS: These yoga memes are of Woody Woodrow from Our Last Night. When I first met him we bonded over yoga, and two years later, he’s certified as a yoga instructor and practicing yoga around the world while touring with OLN. After two years of talking about doing yoga together, we finally were able to when he OLN was in Atlanta at the Masquerade. If you’re a fan of them and want to get your vinyasa on before a show, ask him to help and he’ll be more than happy to do so.

Gabriela Goes Tropical Pt II: Haiti and Mexico

The first day off the boat was Monday and it was spent in none other than the beautiful island of Labadee, Haiti, The gorgeous exclusive beach we were on housed beautiful cabanas and lovely little floaties that I happily lounged on for hours and hours.

The weather in Haiti was amazing but my body is still getting back at me from being in the harsh sun for so long. Even though I applied SPF 110 twice, I was COMPLETELY sunburned all over, and my legs are so flaky  right now it’s embarrassing. I met some lovely people and had an amazing time relaxing with my family though so it was worth it.

I got to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams in Cozumel; I got to kiss a dolphin. I wanted to be a marine biologist and a dolphin trainer up until the age of about 12, and growing up I had more dolphin books and stuffed animals than I could count. I have always been drawn to the graceful Bottle-nose Dolphin and their fragile beauty, and I had been counting down the days until I could swim with one since I found out my family had signed up for the excursion. I was disgustingly happy when I finally got to go in the water with these beautiful creatures, and my family loved the chance to be able to make fun of my serial killer smile (I was THAT excited). Take the chance to enjoy these makeup-less photos because it won’t ever happen again!

I loved the relaxed vibe of the cruise, I was able to dress like myself but still be pretty relaxed.

Shirt, shorts and necklace: Forever 21

Purse: Urban Outfitters

Sandals: Off 5th

Cuff: Nasty Gal

I got a little yoga in on the ship, not as much as I would have liked but it is vacation after all!

The formal dinner of the evening called for my favorite Nasty  Gal dress and Jessica Simpson shoes. I loved being able to go to the club all night and just be able to walk up to my room when I was ready for some sleep. I met some amazing people on the cruise and thanks to social media it’s gonna be so easy to stay in touch.

I still have more to share from the cruise, including some better photos my sister took with her amazing camera, so stay tuned.

Style Sunday: Black, White and Yoga

It’s Sunday! That means this week is drawing to a close and another week is about to begin. I had a wonderful weekend filled with spending time with my family and friends who I haven’t seen in a while. I love being able to catch up with friends I miss when I’m away at school. I ate some yummy food, went to yoga with my mom, spent time transferring posts over to WordPress and drinking a lot of coffee. It’s been disgusting and dreary so the weather has called for pants and sweaters. I’ve also been sitting in Starbucks a lot, and the air conditioning has also called for warmer clothes!

Miranda of High Voltage Blog is my favorite photographer, and she snapped these photos while we were hanging out. We got to catch up from her Miami vacation and just take silly photos together.

Tank Top and Sweater: Loehamans

Pants: BCBGeneration

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Purse: Urban Outfitters

Spiked Cuff: Nasty Gal

Miranda also snapped some photos of me whipping out some yoga poses!
