OUTFIT DIARIES::: VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Hello dear humans!
I apologize for the lack of posts. Between getting settled in LA, starting this internship and moving into a new apartment, I’ve been busy, tired and honestly a little bit lazy! I love my internship- it still hasn’t hit me that this is real. But one thing that has hit me is that I have a reason to dress up every day. Even when I’m not working, I can still hit the streets of LA in some of my favorite clothes. I haven’t gotten a single side eye from a middle aged white man since I’ve been here and it’s pretty dope! I love being able to utilize my closet and come up with new outfits so, here are some of my favorites!

13882453_10153621890521207_4814273352531022403_nMy “first day of work” look! I brought some loafers in case these got uncomfortable. They didn’t but they were horribly squeaky so I ended up changing mid-day!

13920707_10153623142921207_8285650448951236534_nI’ve been enjoying playing around with my style, including leaning a bit more androgynous.

I also appreciate obnoxious metallic clothing and accessories!

I saw The Coathangers, who I wrote about for NYLON, and a band called LA Witch opened for them. They were amazing and of course I bought a shirt. I paired it with a vintage tartan skirt for an extra kick of Viv.

I DID IT- I got my first Vivienne Westwood bag! I was pricing this and knew I needed it. It’s the perfect size, it’s sleek and it literally screams SEX. I paired it with some DIY painted shoes, an accordion pleated button down and a big gold clip to bring it all home.

14344353_10153713137006207_6821653797591803865_nI worked my first event last week and was sent to pick up 6 cases of champagne so of course I took a photo with some of them.

Paired with some star socks and baby pink oxfords I got from London for extra eccentricity.

My most recent look is what I like to describe as Eastern European flapper. It does the job! I got this bag this past weekend and I’m obsessed with it. I also got to wear this shawl thing I got a few weeks ago on sale.

What do you wear to work?!

What I Wore Wednesday: Denim and Summers End

Ah, the bittersweet (mostly bitter) realization looming in the air. It’s the last day of summer. In 12 hours I will be on my way to my first 8am of the semester. But alas, there’s a silver lining; it’s my last first day of school. Senior year of college, what a thought. It feels even more appropriate now to continue wearing black, all the time no exceptions, to mourn the passing of both summer and the past 15 years of my life which have been filled with school. 2I made my twin Alexandra Herstik take some photos of me the other day because I don’t wear my glasses often and I felt kinda cute. You know how sometimes that happens and you need photographic proof of it? Exactly. I never wear denim… except when I’m wearing this jacket, or my one pair of black Topshop jeans, or a pair of really sick torn up, high waisted, bleached denim I scored for $7, which I still need to post about. Anyway, back to this jacket- I was talking to my friend Zach about how I wanted a denim jacket and he said his mom gave him one from the 80’s and had no use for it, how fitting. I got some really cool pins from a lovely lady named Scout, and I added my Vivienne Westwood pin from Search and Destroy in New York. I threw on a Topman tee with my favorite shorts and shoes, both from Urban, and I wore my Zara bag with it. I topped this outfit off with a gold collar necklace by Marc Jacobs I got while I was in New York this summer.

Anyway. Summer’s almost over and I don’t really know what to think of it. It was a whirlwind of traveling and new experiences, people, internships, kicking people out (if it doesn’t serve ya..) and mostly just living. It’s been an incredible summer, the best yet, and although I’m not necessarily excited about school, I am in my own sort of special way. College is such a time of transition and impermanence… it’s strange being present and living somewhere that manages to feel so temporary. I’m right where I need to be though, and I’m where I would have wanted to be my freshman year; that’s a pretty nice realization. 1 9 7 6 5 4 310

Here’s to the best last first day there is, and here’s to the best twin there is.

Full Moon ‘n Scoprio Woes

Well friends, it’s happened. I’ve been back and forth to and from Columbia the past two weeks and my twin sister Alexandra and I finally shot together..after months and months, FINALLY some new outfit photos. Beyond that wonderful thing, it’s beautiful outside, it was May Day a couple days ago, it’s the full moon AND the full moon is in Scorpio, which just so happens to be my moon sign! Life is extra good right now, and I have some exciting things which I’ll announce in my next post!5I’ve loved having papa sun kiss my skin. I love the gray skies but once the spring months roll around I crave nothing more than some iced coffee, lots of trees and some flesh exposing outfits. I’ve been really inspired by the notion of dressing in what makes me feel powerful and beautiful and all that jazz (which is nothing new), but for the first time I’ve figured out how to articulate what exactly it is that makes me feel beautiful.

I’m proud of who I am. I love who I am and I do believe I have a beautiful inside. But when I’m in my pajamas, with no makeup, I don’t really feel beautiful on the outside (which isn’t to say my spirit n soul don’t feel bright and pretty). But I have a young face and I just don’t feel as beautiful on the outside as I do on the inside when I’m au naturale… I feel guilty about that because I’m all about self love, but I realized recently what it is for me that makes wearing my makeup and a great outfit such a spiritual experience.

4When I get dressed up in an outfit like the one I’m wearing in this post, and I’ve got some lipstick on that makes me feel like a power woman, then I feel beautiful. It’s not the makeup, it’s not the clothing, it’s the fact that when I’m wearing something I love, I feel like for the first time how I feel on the inside is represented by the outside… it’s the duality and the synchronicity that make me feel whole. I feel like the best version of myself, I feel like I’m who I’m meant to be, and that’s what makes me feel beautiful. I feel like there’s an equilibrium between how I feel I look on the inside that’s represented on the outside, and you know, that’s a pretty great thing to be able to articulate! So here’s to my incredible twin sister, papa sun and an outfit and some photos that make me feel like a bombshell.3 2 16111098712Shorts: H&M// Top and Shoes: Urban Outfitters// Bag: Dolls Kill// Hat: Vintage// Glasses: Nasty Gal13                                                        Wear what makes you feel beautiful.

Escapism

I think I like fashion because it’s in its own sort of realm of reality; it plays like a fantasy, almost like your favorite song. Of course fashion is all a glamour; a veil of beauty, of delusion. Fashion isn’t some sort of prophetic fairy tale, dying to rescue the promise of perfection for its seeker. Fashion is an escape, a way to clear your mind and change your perception.. If you’re lucky enough to have the privilege of fashion, you’re lucky enough to be able to create whoever it is you want to be, regardless of authenticity. I’ve been playing with shape and silhouettes lately, perhaps because I’m trying to find where my soul fits into this world, where I can make my mark. Fashion is a mental escape for me, a place to focus on when I need to be present and intentional. School work, internships, blogging, writing, are all ways for me to find my own sort of space and reality. Fashion is intentional for me, it’s inspiring and it’s humbling. It is for me, outer purpose. A[1]On Friday I went to see the Guy Bourdin exhibit at the Somerset House. Bourdin had an incredible penchant for really and truly creating incredible fashion images. Bourdin was meticulous in planning out every single shot he took; he knew exactly how he needed to set everything up and create the perfect lines and lighting and whatever else was necessary for his final piece to work. Bourdin was intentional, he was incredible, he was an artist who took pride in every single step. I highly recommend this exhibit to anyone interested in fashion or photography or art in general. The Somerset house is absolutely beautiful as well, it was truly a sight, especially as it got darker in the afternoon. I wore an all black ensemble with some patent details and a coat from Zara, warm and practical considering the nature of London’s weather, very unpredictable.b[1]c[1]d[1]e[1]f[1]k[1]h[1]j[1]Shirt, coat and necklace: Zara/ Leggings: Joe’s Jeans/ Bag: BCBGeneration/ Boots: Jeffrey Campbell/ Necklace: Primark/ Beanie: Unif/ Shirt (around waist): H&Mg[1]

The Freshest Start

There’s something sort of sweet about fear. With the idea of the unknown comes, well, the unknown, and often this conjures up feelings up of anxiety and it’s sister, fear. With a new year comes a fresh start, a new page, and a brand new opportunity to step out of your routine and out of your comfort zone. It’s scary, and terrifying, it’s uncomfortable and anxiety inducing; it’s change. It’s the unknown. It’s the wilderness. Yet with this realization that there’s fear comes the simple idea that there’s strength, knowledge and growth to be found in that same fear. How beautiful is it to be reminded that we must be scared to find change; we must be the pioneers to find new, uncharted territory. The new year promises yet another unknown, and a beautiful, clean slate. Today I’ve been basking in fear and remembering that there’s no growth to be found in your comfort zone, that perhaps being scared is the best gift one could have. Being scared means adventure is ahead. 5[1]Tomorrow, I am crossing the great pond to begin my semester at the London College of Fashion. I’m ready and I’m packed, but I’m nervous and a bit scared. I don’t know what to expect, but I do know that I have all the tools I need to be okay. Today was an incredible reminder that no matter what, even countries away, I will always have a support system. I spent the day with my best friend and my twin sister, going to Waffle House, enjoying some coffee, taking photos in fields and watching Sweeney Todd. I even celebrated my birthday with the twin a month early since we’ll be apart as we celebrate for the first time (I’ll turn 21 before she does, how funny). Today, I remembered that I will always have my tribe. It was an amazing beginning to the year, and a wonderful last hoorah before I leave. No matter where I go, I will always have the strength that my family and friends have instilled in me, and that’s a pretty beautiful start to the year. Today, take a moment to remember the strength you need to survive this world is already inside you. Perhaps the key to unlocking this strength is fear, and realizing that it’s okay to be scared. them[1]1[1]4[1]3[1]2[1]8[1]I’ve had all my clothing packed since Monday, so I’ve had the same five pieces on rotation since. Since I’m not bringing this skirt with me to England I thought it would be perfect to spend the day in.9[1]10[1]11[1]

Wednesdays Are for…

Wednesdays are for wearing something extra dark and powerful. They’re for working at Hip Wa Zee, eating El Burrito and watching American Horror Story. Wednesday’s are a personal victory, an ode to the middle of the week, an ode to balance right before the weekend. One of my favorite things about this semester is how I’ve come to appreciate hump days. Granted, I only have classes two days a week, but regardless I feel like I never slow down. Although my Wednesdays are spent working, I’ve managed to find some sweetness in them. During the month of October, and the most hectic month of the year, my friend Ivory and I decided to have “Witch Wednesday”, in which, you guessed it, we dressed in our darkest clothes. If you remember my witch post, you’ll know that every day is witch-day for me.. but it is fun to have a day designated to wearing my favorite pieces. wwWitch Wednesday soon coupled itself with the return of American Horror Story and so began my love affair for this very special day of the week. Here’s the thing; life is crazy and hard and hectic, and during all of this we forget how good it can be. Here’s a trick; don’t wait for life to throw something wonderful at you, instead, make something to look forward to for yourself. For me, this means spending the day  wearing an outfit that makes me feel like a Death Queen, working with one of my closest friends at work and then ending the day by watching my favorite tv show.  American Horror Story: Freak Show is amazing and watching it with Ivory and my sister makes it that much better.ww 2ww 3www4Today, I paired my favorite tulip shorts with a harness bra, some knee socks and my favorite “Witch” bag.

Baby Steps

I’ve been trying to figure out if life slows down when you find balance or if balance is using the least amount of effort possible to keep up with everything that’s going on. I’m not sure if either of these are right, or if there’s truly an answer at all. I think that finding balance is finding moments of stillness among chaos. I’m taking baby steps towards balance. I’m taking baby steps towards working hard without being overwhelmed. I’m taking one day at a time, tackling all I can do with a soft heart and loving mind. Lately, baby steps have been nothing more than sitting outside on my porch at 11pm, listening to some music, burning some incense and taking some time for myself to breathe. Balance, for me, is taking time to explore with my sister and to take baby steps towards finding stillness in the motions of day to day life. 8

Alex and I walked around and explored the statehouse on a eerie day. It was perfect and just chilly enough and the energy of the day felt charged with change. I’m ready for October. I am ready to find stillness and balance.

Fauna and Flora in Florida

Some of my favorite days are spent in leisure. Waking up late just to go to lunch and stroll around. I spent my Tuesday with the twin, walking around downtown St.Pete after we got some killer Asian food. We got some ice cream, found a little secret garden and wandered around a little bit taking in the salty air with some smiles and laughs. After we walked around the downtown area, we headed to the beach to take some photos against a stark turquoise wall.It was a lovely day with lovely company. Thanks to the Nordstrom Anniversary  Sale and Zara, I picked up a couple of new pieces, including this killer Topshop wrap skirt and necklace and Zara bucket bag. I painted my lips with Candy Yum Yum by MAC and grabbed my favorite Deena and Ozzy heels to finish off the look.

Sunday Style; Dancing into Creation

Sundays call for sleeping in and spending time with loved ones. They call for big, goofy smiles and living from a place of love. Sundays are for slow moments sipping coffee, and nights celebrating friends birthdays. Sundays are for embracing what you love and letting it light you up.

We were inspired by Nataraja, a Hindu God and a form of Shiva who is said to have danced the world into creation.

What I’m Wearing Wednesday; Mid November Daze

I love November for the most part. I love that it gets chilly and that I can celebrate Thanksgiving. I love the fact that for at least one day a year, I can sit down with my family and be thankful for everything the universe has so graciously given me, the fact that  I have to drive home for Thanksgiving makes it all the better. This year, my Thanksgiving break is going to be busy and lovely! I am heading home Tuesday, seeing Paramore Wednesday with one of my best friends, celebrating the holiday Thursday and then celebrating my mom’s birthday which is Saturday the 30th. Not to mention that Hannukah starts on Thanksgiving! Yeesh, what a busy four days! Since I am a planner, I knew I had to squeeze in the shoot that I missed this Sunday! Well, the amazing Morgan was gracious enough to shoot with me yesterday. I whipped out my trustee white wig that I got at Hip Wa Zee, my new Topshop leather leggings and my Zara cropped long sleeve striped shirt for a simple outfit.

Shirt and Purse: Zara// Leggings and Bracelet : Topshop// Watch: Michael Kors// Jacket: Express/ Socks and Shoes: Target// Wig: Hip Wa Zee// Necklace: Forever 21.

What do you wear once the weather gets colder??
