FEELING YRSELF

Guys it’s happened. For the first time in my 21 years of existence I’m feelin myself- completely and utterly without any damn guilt. I’ve had this sense of peace with who I am, where I am and where I’m going and that feels good! A big part of this, for me, is that for the first time I love what I’m wearing. I feel like my clothing is a conscious and visual manifestation of my soul; I feel aligned. I like to think of this as enlightened personal style, soul style if you will; a non-verbal, purely aesthetic representation of the beauty your soul feels from all the high vibe living it’s doing in this life. In my case, this means a freshly shaved head, some good lipstick, a lot of black, something slightly unexpected and a tad of something sultry. In today’s post this also means something outside of my comfort zone- color. 1Okay so deep green may not be a shocking color, or anything explicit, but for this gal (who feels wholly herself in head-to-toe black) it’s a step and it shall be noted. I saw this top and immediately gravitated toward the slight side boob silhouette and the folky pattern. This top reminds me of the Celts, of folklore, of the faeries. When I realized this shirt fit perfectly, I had no choice- I was in and I had to buy it. I paired the look with the most amazing and probably most important piece of jewelry I have ever received. My lovely Ivory found was telling me all about this magnifying glass necklace she had found at the flea market and I knew I had to have it. I even asked her to hold on to any Aquarius coins she found so I could pair it with the necklace. That night she got home and sent me a photo- she had an Aquarius coin and hadn’t realized it. Synchronicity anyone?? The next day she gave me this necklace- the most beautiful, yellow gold, perfect looking magnifying glass with the trusty coin right beside it. I definitely cried- it’s like a friendship horcrux, when you do something so out of love that you give your friends a little piece of your soul so they’ll always have you with them.  2I paired this top with my only pair of black jeans from Topshop (which I am obsessed with). my trusty fuzzy sweater and some clog like sandals. I was going for space alien 70’s chic. 11 10 9 8 7 4Shirt and shoes: Urban Outfitters// Pants: Topshop// Necklace: Forgotten Feather Vintage5What’s your soul style?

What I Wore Wednesday: Denim and Summers End

Ah, the bittersweet (mostly bitter) realization looming in the air. It’s the last day of summer. In 12 hours I will be on my way to my first 8am of the semester. But alas, there’s a silver lining; it’s my last first day of school. Senior year of college, what a thought. It feels even more appropriate now to continue wearing black, all the time no exceptions, to mourn the passing of both summer and the past 15 years of my life which have been filled with school. 2I made my twin Alexandra Herstik take some photos of me the other day because I don’t wear my glasses often and I felt kinda cute. You know how sometimes that happens and you need photographic proof of it? Exactly. I never wear denim… except when I’m wearing this jacket, or my one pair of black Topshop jeans, or a pair of really sick torn up, high waisted, bleached denim I scored for $7, which I still need to post about. Anyway, back to this jacket- I was talking to my friend Zach about how I wanted a denim jacket and he said his mom gave him one from the 80’s and had no use for it, how fitting. I got some really cool pins from a lovely lady named Scout, and I added my Vivienne Westwood pin from Search and Destroy in New York. I threw on a Topman tee with my favorite shorts and shoes, both from Urban, and I wore my Zara bag with it. I topped this outfit off with a gold collar necklace by Marc Jacobs I got while I was in New York this summer.

Anyway. Summer’s almost over and I don’t really know what to think of it. It was a whirlwind of traveling and new experiences, people, internships, kicking people out (if it doesn’t serve ya..) and mostly just living. It’s been an incredible summer, the best yet, and although I’m not necessarily excited about school, I am in my own sort of special way. College is such a time of transition and impermanence… it’s strange being present and living somewhere that manages to feel so temporary. I’m right where I need to be though, and I’m where I would have wanted to be my freshman year; that’s a pretty nice realization. 1 9 7 6 5 4 310

Here’s to the best last first day there is, and here’s to the best twin there is.

KIM AND YE GO RUSTIC

As promised, here’s part II of  my KIMYE series with my favorite human Bakari.  For this set, we went a bit more rustic and endured the woods of Columbia, South Carolina for a bootylicious shoot (I hope). I wore a Topshop skirt and bra, Zara bag and some Jessica Simpson shoes to get my inner Kim flowing. DSC_6841DSC_6845 DSC_6846 DSC_6847 DSC_6848 DSC_6849 DSC_6850 DSC_6851 DSC_6853 DSC_6854 DSC_6855 DSC_6856 DSC_6858 DSC_6859 DSC_6861 DSC_6862 DSC_6865 DSC_6866

K I M Y E:: P A R T 1

So, my wonderful friend Bakari and I had the fabulous idea of doing a Kim and Kanye inspired shoot. Oh- but we didn’t stop there. We had three outfit changes in three seperate locations, all of which weree very, very Kimye.  I paired my Reformation bodysuit with my favorite Jeffrey Campbells and my favorite Topshop jeans for our first look. I’ll be posting the next couple looks over the next few days.

So without further adieu- here you go. DSC_6801 DSC_6804DSC_6812DSC_6813 DSC_6814 DSC_6815 DSC_6818 DSC_6822 DSC_6823 DSC_6825 DSC_6826 DSC_6828 DSC_6829 DSC_6830 DSC_6832 DSC_6833 DSC_6834 DSC_6835 DSC_6836

The Fall Edit

I’m all about monochrome, specifically black, head to toe. There’s something so powerful about wearing all black. I feel like a true Death Queen when I wear my favorite color (sorry mom) but I do my best to wear lots of gold, or at least a red lip to break up the look a bit. One of my favorite things about wearing black, and  neutral in general, is that you can really amp up the texture. I’ve been all about fuzzy sweaters and I absolutely adore tartan and flannel, and now that the weather is getting colder, my obsession is only getting worse. This season I’m inspired by mauve, camel, stone grays, black and lots and lots of gold.
2

Cheetah is also one of those prints I really can’t get sick of. These sleek booties are absolutely perfect and I love the vintage sort of style they exude. I’ve been all about midi skirts since last fall and I don’t think the love is gonna fade. Pair a midi skirt with a big, chunky knit for a new take on the silhouette.

1

A tartan cape seems like a solid staple to have. I would pear this little number with a simple sweater, a thick beanie, and a black boot with a gold accent. I’m all about the circle shades, so The Row’s circle sunnies would be a go to.

3

I love the juxtaposition of a delicate faux fur with a chunky boot. Grab an oversized sweater, some fishnets and some good gold accessories and you’re sure to be the sexiest girl on the block.

4

Black, gold and cheetah are the ultimate sex kitten staples in my eyes. Add a red lip, some sexy sleek boots, a bit of fake fur and just the right amount of perfume and there’s no way you can’t feel confident. This clutch by Acne is absolutely ridiculous and to die for, and I love what it adds to the rather simple look.

3

You can’t go wrong with leather, or with Alexander Wang. Sculpted pieces and the right amount of nude take this outfit to the next level.

What are you wishing you could wear this fall?

Namaste,

Gabriela

The archetypal witch conjures up an image of an old crone mixing herbs in a cauldron, most certainly for a spell or ritual. The word “witch” makes us think of an old hag, riding around a chilly October evening on her broom, casting curses at whoever is unlucky enough to be in her way. Witchcraft and witches exist in modern day, but definitely not in the way that most of the populations thinks.  Every energetic worker, occultist, or witch will have a different definition of the word “witch”.  Although some people tie working magick to witchcraft, not all witches work with magick, just like not all magick workers are witches. What does that mean? Not everyone who manipulates energy for a certain outcome is a witch, and not every witch works with energy. The history of witchcraft is long and winding, and cultures ranging from the Celts to the Ancient Mesopotamian’s had their own form of energy work or magick which could be considered Witchcraft. Witchcraft, and the use of healing through herbs and natural remedies, divination, magick and spells can be passed down from generation to generation in a practice called Hereditary Witchcraft. Witchcraft ranges widely from practitioner to practitioner and you don’t have to have a family that practices witchcraft to practice it yourself. Since Witchcraft is a practice and not a religion, you can follow almost any religious path and still be a witch.

Witchcraft can include anything from divination and crystal work to spells and herb and faerie lore and magick. It’s a personal practice, with an underlying idea that you have tools at your disposal to create and see parts of this life that you may have missed without the awareness or consciousness that comes with Witchcraft. It’s kind of difficult to understand in an objective light, so I’ll share a bit about my personal practice.

My practice of Witchcraft involves working with the tarot, faeries, crystals and and energy work. like spells. I work with the moon and I incorporate my yoga practice as a form of energy work as well. I practice magick, although I don’t believe in using that sort of energy to cause any negativity or harm to anyone. A lot of my practice is being positive, being aware of the power of my thoughts and actions and how I impact other people. In my opinion this is the basis of all energy work, how can you expect to manipulate energy if you’re not aware of the power of your own at all? Thoughts and intentions go a long way, after all.

I became involved with Witchcraft when I was 11 or 12. It started with a deck of Faerie oracle cards, called The Faerie’s Oracle, by Brian Froud. This led me to finding the book “A Witches Guide to Faery Folk” which began me on my journey. 8 or 9 years later and my path is still evolving. I saw this bag on Dolls Kill and had to have it. I love to incorporate fashion and spirituality so this was a match made in heaven. I paired it with some drop waist pants, a halter tank with a low back, some black boots and lots of gold details to finish off the outfit.Shirt: Forever 21/ Necklace: Topshop/ Pants: Zara/ Boots: H&M/ Bag: Dolls Kill

For me, witchcraft is a spiritual practice that means being aware of my energy and my place in the world. It means using my intuition and the tools I have to create the life I want to live, in a peaceful and loving way. I don’t condone hurting anyone or attempting to hurt anyone to get a desired outcome and I especially don’t condone any form of magick that hurts more than it helps. More than anything, this is my practice and my story and my own form of witchcraft.

Fauna and Flora in Florida

Some of my favorite days are spent in leisure. Waking up late just to go to lunch and stroll around. I spent my Tuesday with the twin, walking around downtown St.Pete after we got some killer Asian food. We got some ice cream, found a little secret garden and wandered around a little bit taking in the salty air with some smiles and laughs. After we walked around the downtown area, we headed to the beach to take some photos against a stark turquoise wall.It was a lovely day with lovely company. Thanks to the Nordstrom Anniversary  Sale and Zara, I picked up a couple of new pieces, including this killer Topshop wrap skirt and necklace and Zara bucket bag. I painted my lips with Candy Yum Yum by MAC and grabbed my favorite Deena and Ozzy heels to finish off the look.

Wishlist Wednesday

Well folks, the time has come. I have about two and a half weeks left of being a teenager. I know, I know, if I hadn’t put my age in my bio (over there——> ) you probably would have thought I’m 17,, or 12 and a half. Alas, that’s not so true now is it. This coming groundhogs day at 10:17 PM, I will officially be 20… and honestly, I’m excited. Being a teenager was a great excuse for making some dumb mistakes and having fun, and I’ve definitely found myself in the past few years, but that’s exactly it. I’ve already done that sort of soul searching that a lot of teenagers haven’t done; I know what I want to do as a career, I have my friends, I have my religious and spiritual views and beliefs. I started getting into the metaphysical and occult around 12; I spent my days after middle school reading up on faeries and Wicca, Paganism and tarot. These passions have carried over and helped to shape me into who I am today, and these settled beliefs and convictions have always made me feel a bit older than my age. At (almost) 20, I finally feel like I feel my age, although I may not look it. So, as celebration of 20 fabulous, beautiful and blissful years of life, I have complied a wishlist of things I don’t really need but would love to have in my closet.

In all honesty, I don’t really even want anything for my birthday. My parents are coming up to Columbia to celebrate with the twin and I and I have so me plans with friends for the weekend (three day weekends all semester can I get an amen). Honestly though, maybe that’s growing up; being happy with what you have.

Zara wishlist

My Zara favorites. I tend to ask for accessories as gifts, they’re more timeless and I can get more use out of them than just a single piece of clothing..

Topshop wishlist

I mean, it’s Topshop..that’s really all I need to say

Eugenia Kim Wishlist

Eugenia Kim creates some seriously fantastic hats. A little red fox ear cap?? Yes please

Nasty Gal Wishlist

Nasty Gal shoes, coats and lingerie. Thank you.

For Love & Lemons Wishlist

For Love & Lemons features beautiful and bewitching dresses and now has an entire line devoted to lingerie. Skivvies are the perfect birthday gift…am I right?

Sunday Style on Monday: Dali

I got home yesterday from Florida and I am so happy to be back in my beautiful city, but I can’t deny that I had a nice vacation with my family. From breakfast, to yoga on the beach, to shopping, and the Dali museum, I would like to think it was a successful vacation . I’ve been to the Dali museum in St.Petersburg before it was renovated, but I hadn’t been to the new location. If you’re in Tampa or St.Pete or surrounding areas, you must go. Dali was such an incredible artist, there’s nothing quite like him or his work. He was such an incredible mind and soul and it’s worth it to get the little headphones and listen to his mustache narrate and explain his art. Perfect for getting absorbed and lost in his art on a rainy day.

Shirt: Urban Outfitters/ Jacket and Necklace: Forever 21/ Leggings: Topshop/ Pursse: Zara/ Boots: Dolce Vita/ Hat:H&M

This is a pretty accurate description of my twin and I, if I do say so myself.

Ladies and gents, don’t I have a beautiful family?! My grandma(in the middle) just turned 80 over summer, and my mother (right) just turned 59. My father, the lovely gentleman who looks like Ben Kingsley just turned 64. Also this means that in 2014 my sister and I turn 20, my mom turns 60 and my dad turns 65..wow.

I post regular photos of my adventures and outfits on instagram, @gabyherstik

Hope you all have a great New Years Eve Eve!

Witching Hour Wednesday: Splurge or Steal

It’s a very hot topic these days; splurge or steal? Sometimes something is worth the splurge; an investment piece is exactly that, an investment. But sometimes, most of the time, we can’t afford to buy every splurge we want. Well, that’s where the steal comes into play. I am in no way encouraging stealing, merely the idea of finding a cheaper alternative to the lust worthy Alexander Wang boots you’ve been eyeing. “Well Gabriela, how can we find such a heavenly alternative” you may be asking yourself. Not to fret, my fashionistas, I have got your back. I have gathered both splurge and steal versions of some of my favorite styles of the season in my favorite color, black. What else would you expect for “Witching Hour Wednesday”?? Click through for all the links!

Witching Hour Wednesday: Look 1

All black through this life and the next. That may as well be my motto. Anyway, if you’re in the mood to splurge, click the image above and you will find links to all the items. I love this lipstick and bag and cape and everything and maybe one day I will be able to buy all of it. Alas, today is not that day, but a girl can still dream right?! I love mixing textures with bright gold accents to create excitement in a monochromatic look.

Witching Hour Wednesday: Boots

Sexy and slick black boots are my weakness. I am still obsessing over Das Boot from Unif’s collection a year ago. And of course, these Alexander Wang and Topshop boots as well.

Witching Hour Wednesday: Bags

I’m a shoe girl, but I think I am even more of a purse girl. Well, I think it’s pretty tied. But I LOVE purses and bags, especially when they are big and have spikes and can double as weapons.

Witching Hour Wednesday: Look 2

Hurrah! Alas! Beautiful pieces FOR UNDER $50! You’re all welcome, I accept monetary donations as well as hugs and kisses as payment for my elaborate search for these wonderful treasures. Anyway, it may be hard finding a cape that’s relatively cheap if you want a true, thick, structured style cape. If there’s one piece I would invest on in this outfit it would be the cape; it will last you seasons and seasons and is worth the money. These Topshop leather leggings are actually the ones I have and I am OBSESSED with them.I actually even did a mini yoga class with my friend in them the other day, inversions, sun salutations, arm balances and all and they were comfortable and didn’t rip or stretch AT ALL. I love them, you can buy them at Nordstrom if you’re not in NYC or Europe and don’t feel like ordering them online.

Witching Hour Wednesday: Boots

I can’t get over these boots either. Again, all under $50, I may actually cry from excitement (although my wallet may not). I love boots that make me feel like I could kick someone and still look good doing it.

Witching Hour Wednesday: Bags

Purses, in my book, can swing between being a splurge or steal, depending on the piece and how well you know your steal. I love Zara purses because they tend to be good quality and they look super high fashion while still being relatively affordable. Forever 21 has cute purses but they’re definitely not good quality. H&M is also brilliant for purses, and they are pretty good quality as well. Again, all the purses above are steals, and hence, under $50!

Anyway, this could probably double as a macabre gift guide of sorts.

What are you splurging/stealing this holiday season?
