BREATHING FASHION TURNS 7

Last year when we turned six I was still in shock that Breathing Fashion is still here. Now we’re turning 7 and I’m STILL in shock. WOW. It’s been over half a decade with this site and I still love it. I started Breathing Fashion as a way to cultivate my voice in fashion journalism- it started as a platform share my own content in hopes that I eventually would be writing for other sites and magazines. And guess what fam- WE MADE IT. unspecifiedI’m writing for some of my favorite  sites and I get to write about feminist things and witchy things! I’m also now based in LA as I intern in the PR department of Vivienne Westwood. I just booked my first real styling shoot for a cool California based magazine and I have some fun pieces I’m working on. I’m still overwhelmed at life and you know, the fact that people actually care enough about what I have to say to read it. My fabulous twin Alexandra accompanied me to check another big thing off my bucket list- driving the Angeles Crest highway. Also referred to as Donnie Darko highway by the twin and I- Angeles Crest is where the Carpathian Ridge scenes of Donnie Darko were filmed. Unfortunately we only drove a few of the 66 mile highway, which goes through the San Gabriel Mountains (ha!) but driving the whole thing is another item on the bucket list. The view was overwhelming and beautiful and honestly just magical and majestic. Although I have a fear of heights, I was able to deal because Alex was driving and Donnie Darko, duh. And yes- I cried and played the soundtrack the whole time. unspecified-1 I’m going to do my best to have a real birthday post, but for now I think these will do. I’m wearing a vintage skirt I found at Goodwill with Ivory and some new shades I got here in LA. I’m so humbled by all the love you guys give me. I’m doing my best to make this even better.

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN YOU’RE OBNOXIOUSLY HUNGOVER

Sometimes it happens. You don’t eat enough, you go too hard, and you wake up feeling like death incarnate the next morning. We’ve all been there- hangovers are a part of life, for the most of us, after all. And even when you puke in the bathroom of your favorite brunch place (aka me last Saturday) it always helps to at least look decent. I never thought I would be the sort of girl who bought a baseball cap but I had a moment of weakness at Urban Outfitters and had to buy it. I think sober me was looking out for hungover me because let me tell you- it’s an easy way to look put together when you don’t feel it.

I paired this cap with a vintage slip dress from Ivory at Forgotten Feather, a cut out bra from Urban Outfitters, my favorite bucket bag from Zara and loafers from Target.

If you want to steal my look- go for it. Click below to shop! And don’t forget- if you drink, be smart, don’t drive and know your limits! it’s okay to be hungover. Just drink water, look cute and let your body rest.

Renaissance Magick on a Monday

Life is for sharing.  It’s for community, and family and friends who may as well be family. It’s about having plenty and giving in abundance. It’s about sharing love and light and space with souls who sing at your frequency. We have walked this earth many times, but we were never meant to walk it alone. You are not meant to carry your sadness or hurt or pain by yourself. You are meant to hold it along with others who also hold part of your heart. Find humans who understand this and life will be much more joyful.5I am so overwhelmingly thankful for Ivory and my sister Alexandra for this reason- they know me and care for me when I’m upset or hurt. Most of the time, thankfully, we spend our weekends in the best of moods, eating brunch, drinking coffee and taking photos. Now that Ivory has moved into her new studio, this means even more time and space for photos. BUT- there’s still no time for chill because Indie South Fair is coming to Columbia THIS WEEKEND, April 9-10. This means::: vintage, handmade goods, coffee, tintype photographs, lots of good music and GRILLED CHEESE FOOD TRUCKS. There will be so much fun and festivity and talent and you won’t wanna miss it. I will be there helping Ivory sell her precious items and I cannot wait. Come visit and you too can be a little Renaissance faery.1 3 241110131297All items are (except these Topshop jeans) from Forgotten Feather, styled by Ivory and myself.

Anyway- Come out to Indie South Fair this weekend at 701 Whaley from 10am to 6pm for lots of fun! You can find the event page HERE. PS- Come say HELLO!

Cheers,
Gabriela

Queen of Hearts::: Forgotten Feather Valentines Day Lookbook

I’m disgustingly lucky to be surrounded by ridiculously creative and talented humans. Seriously. Last week I spent  my Sunday dressing up in Ivory’s vintage lingerie with my two best friends and my twin for this super special Valentines Day lookbook. We rearranged my room and got into character- we were going for a mixed era, vintage-esque look. Ivory recently launched an entire collection of this incredible lingerie, which was shot by my sister and styled by Ivory with some help from yours truly. Spending the day with my favorite humans, some fresh flowers and some rosé wasn’t too shabby.

So, do you actually need an excuse to buy yourself some lingerie? Absolutely not. You are your best excuse, and if you have a significant other who will appreciate vintage lingerie, then that’s just a lovely plus. But here’s the thing. If you’re ever upset or sad or if you ever forget that you’re a bad bitch, throw on some vintage lingerie and cheer yourself up. Making yourself feel good is important- and there’s nothing wrong with draping yourself in some silky threads to do it. Have a party for yourself- celebrate everything that makes you, you- wear something that makes you feel like a goddess. Valentines Day is just a wonderful excuse to love yourself, your girlfriends and everyone who loves you as much as YOU love you.

Psychedelic Dreams and Sunny Days

Sometimes things are rough, sometimes you end up feeling like you’re in a Woodstock nirvana. Although this December has been unseasonably warm (and people still don’t believe in climate change!), Ivory and I used it to our advantage the other day when we decided to team up with my sister and make some magic.  We found inspiration in photos of face paint from Woodstock and decided the best route to take was to dress up in some 70’s garb, grab some flowers and take photos. The sun was warm and kissing along our cheeks, and there was the slightest breeze. There was one point where I was posing, eyes closed, breathing in the winter air and just felt it. Bliss. Have you ever felt like universe is just cradling you in its palm? That’s what it felt like.  1I think my favorite part about these photos is that they ended up looking like engagement photos or Ivory and I.  Although she’s my best friend and not my fiance, I am so beyond grateful for this beaut. She is just as ethereal on the inside as she is on the outside, and she has such a gift for finding vintage clothing and giving it a new life, I mean, look at these pieces! The icing on the cake was that my friend Cory tagged along and that Alexandra took these photos. So thankful for weirdos who get me. 3 467812131816171514 Vintage dress and slip (on Ivory) and jumpsuit (on me) : Forgotten Feather Vintage/ Necklace (on Ivory): Fossil and Hide / Poncho: Thrifted Sisters/ Shoes: Free People

GIRLS

Breathing Fashion and Forgotten Feather Vintage bring you GIRLS.a

Sneak into the school bathroom with your best friend, ignoring the teachers who tell you that what you’re wearing isn’t up to par. You were never meant to follow their rules anyway.  So you enter the world of girls, transported back to a time and place where things didn’t make any more sense then they do know (but everything was better). Wear your cardigan with pride or irony, you’re best suited for both anyway. You pass notes and smiles, and laugh when you’re told to go and change. You’re far removed and isolated, lost in a time warp from decades ago, feeding in abandoned bathrooms with sisters of different blood. 12labifecb3ikabmnop

Ivory styled the both of us in head to toe Forgotten Feather. Shes a goddess.

BF DOES HALLOWEEN 2015

As some of your may or may not know, I work at Hip Wa Zee– aka the coolest costume meets vintage shop located in good ole Columbia, South Caroina. We take Halloween very seriously, duh, and all the employees dress up the last two weeks of October (except all of us are so excited that we start earlier). I’ve been chronicling my costumes on Instagram and Facebook, but decided this was the perfect place to debut all of them.

 LYDIA DEETZ

12 11 10The whole premise was to look like my whole life is a dark room, one big dark room. Thankfully, for most of my costumes, I was able to use clothing I already had. Case in point- this entire look. The shirt and skirt are both from H&M, the bra top is Topshop and my hat is vintage. My new Polaroid camera came in handy (even though it was white) and I just put white makeup along my cheekbones and purple under my eyes to achieve the whole “dead on the inside” thing.

Gaby Had a Little Lamb

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? I am, because I’m a lamb (duh). This turned out to be one of my favorite costumes because I spent the entire day feeling adorable. I wore a leotard from Nasty Gal with some bloomer shorts I got from our store. I paired it with gloves (also from our store) that I covered in cotton balls,  ears I made from felt and cotton balls and a white wig (also from the store). I topped it off with white socks and oxfords from Target and a fresh face of lamb makeup.

“I see you shiver with antici…

pation”

So I realized I pretty much dress like this most of the time anyway, except you know, with more clothing. This leather bra and waist cincher from Ivory of Forgotten Feather, shorts are from Hip Wa Zee, thigh highs are from Urban and shoes are from Target. I contoured the cr** out of my face, put on my favorite deep red lippie and called it a day. Oh- but don’t forget the pearls.

Grown Up Wednesday Addams

3 4

I’m a homicidal maniac, they  look just like everyone else.  I was Wednesday all grown up, because you know she totally would have had half her hair shaved off and she would’ve been into witchcraft and tarot. Ivory found me this vintage set over summer, literally the day before I told her I wanted to be Wednesday Addams one day for Halloween (spooky coincidence, no?!).  I paired this with my oxfords and a glowstick axe I painted.

Edgar Allan HOE

5

Because I wanted to dress like Edgar, mustache and all, but I wanted to do my own take on it and make it sexy… then Edgar Allan Hoe was born. I’m still proud of it. I wore fishnets, an old button down from American Threads, my favorite hot pants, a vintage scarf from Ivory and sock garters from Hip Wa Zee. I paired it with my mustache and a wrap around braid. I won a costume contest for this and I’m still excited about it.

White Trash

Get it ? I only worked for a few hours between classes and I wanted to see if I could pull this off. The fake cigarette behind my ear was just the icing on the Mountain Dew.

And my Halloween Costume…

Yzma

6yyy

“PULL THE LEVER KRONK”

SO this was pretty much the greatest costume I ever put together pretty much solely because I LOVE YZMA.  Alex and I grew up watching The Emperors New Groove and I always admired Yzma’s charisma and outfits. I got the brilliant idea of dressing up as my favorite lady on Halloween night and I knew I had to follow through. I paired a vintage slip from Ivory with a purple feather (that perfectly matched my sidecut!) and I glued purple fabric on a black collar. Topped it off with Yzma makeup and a thigh garter and I was Gucci.

What were YOU this Halloween?

WESTERN GIRL SOUTHERN WORLD

Okay guys this post title isn’t even a lie. Fun fact, Alexandra and I were born in San Diego, where we lived for two years before moving to LA for five years. We ended up in Atlanta, where my parents have lived for the past ten years until they moved back to San Diego this past July. Alexandra and I now live in Columbia, SC where we’re seniors at USC. So, quite literally, Western girls in a Southern world.         54It’s been a really tough week for Columbia, something which deserves it’s own post (which will come in the next few days.) I’m lucky that my family and friends are safe, and that the sun was out shining for a few days. I had gone to Atlanta last weekend with Ivory where I helped her sell vintage at Fall Fest at Candler Park. On the way there we stopped at her favorite vintage store in Augusta, where I was promised incredible finds. I was not disappointed- overstock from Free People and Urban galore. It included this eagle halter top. It ties all the way down and is SO SOFT- and it looks perfect with my small boobs. I’m in. I paired it with my favorite  vintage hat in the world which I got HERE IN COLUMBIA at Sid and Nancy’s. I grabbed my favorite boots and my leather jacket and JEANS. Blue jeans. Blue jeans I found for $7 at Buffalo Exchange. I’m still in shock. This was an outfit of thrifted goodness, head to toe. 326711   Hat: Vintage// Jeans: Buffalo Exchange// Boots: Dolce Vita// Jacket: Express8 10 9All photos by the twin, Alexandra.

Greyer Gardens

If there’s a secret to having a happy life, it’s definitely to surround yourself with friends just as strange and unusual as you are. Mornings spent draped in vintage lingerie with stacks of costume rings, stickers on your face, best friends, and iced coffee may be far and few between, but they’re some of my favorites. Finding people like Ivory is a blessing- finding a souls who are always down to take photos and put on green glitter eyeshadow are the kind of people you hold onto. Ivory and I saw these rings and knew that we had to go all out- white fur, crazy jewel tone makeup and loads of sweet vintage. The twin, Alexandra, took the photos, which were so much fun to shoot. We didn’t realize we were unintentionally channeling Grey Gardens until Alex pointed it out- we weren’t mad about it. 121203 10 8 6 511161514132223 Happy Sunday.

Disco Witch

Lay your flowers out. Carefully, veiled in a glamour thinner than the lace you place on your skin. You’re gilded,  a crescent moon found on the darkest night, soft summer clouds cocooning gentle light. Place your roses one by one. A magick manifests as the earth whispers her secrets to you, slowly through weighted breaths, lulling you into a world caught between this and the next. Your heavy limbs find their way to a circle, where the only answer is to move your feet and dance under the midnight sky. You can get caught here, dancing with the fey until you’ve forgotten where you come from.aaYou’re a disco witch, a different breed. You find your call in the metallic glamour of long nights and vibrant beats. Your magick comes in the form of sequins, flowers and friends who spend their time exploring what it means to dance unapologetically through this life. You paint yourselves in silver like the stars and gold and bronze the color of the melting sun. You’re of the cosmos, a wicked kind of soul that’s not afraid to seek answers in the form of opal gilded starts. bbGI3ccGI2ddiilloothis oneMove gently. mm nnThanks to my babe Ivory and my twin Alexandra for making my Sunday perfect.
