MONDAY MAGICK WITH THE NUMINOUS

Happy Monday one and all. I hope all my friends celebrating MLK Day are taking it easy, sending out grateful vibes for the amazing man and knowing that it’s up to us to keep his mission and legacy goin’. Today I worked a little, chilled a little and took some photos- of my CUSTOMIZED BIRTH CHART TEE SHIRT!! I came home from vacation to the most beautiful shirt from my #GirlBoss Ruby. The Numinous and YR Store collaborated for these sick tees and I am so excited to wear mine all the time and never take it off.2I’m an Aquarius, born in year of the dog and my birth number is 9. This shirt features all that and more- an amethyst for my birthstone, Uranus because it’s my ruling planet and cool blue because it’s my color. Erin Petson designed the shirt and I wish I had words besides “so obsessed” to describe my feelings, but I don’t! It’s super soft, it has all my favorite things, it’s from my favorite job/magazine and it’s personalized to me! 1Aquarius is the “rebel” and “humanitarian” of the zodiac, a trend setter committed to paving  the way for a better world, one weird outfit and idea at a time. Naturally, I wanted to accentuate this along with my love of the cosmos and also wanted add a little bit of party flair. I worked in my DIY painted heels, my trusty star tights from Target, my Deandri choker and my furry jacket from Distrubia (which I like to call my “fashion gorilla” coat). I added in some dark berry lipstick and a bit of sass as a final touch. Alexandra always takes photos that make me feel fabulous and I am so thankful for sharing a birthday with her. 548 967All photos by my twin Alexandra 3 Here’s to a wonderful year.

YOUR MENSWEAR RESOLUTION:: WEAR MORE FLORAL

The other day I was daydreaming about the usual things; aliens, coffee, books, graduation and men in nice clothing. My mind wandered to the latter and all of the sudden my brain was overcome by more well dressed men than one girl can handle. But there was one thing that these men were missing, one pattern that my little single heart still skips a beat over- floral.

floralI can hear you now “GABRIELA THAT IS SO 2013” and this will be my replyFLORAL

Florals aren’t a trend- the way they’re presented on clothing may be, but floral ISN’T GROUNDBREAKING AND IT WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE! And I will never stop loving how men look in floral. I don’t care if Gucci did floral in 2013 or if Dries Van Noten in 2014.  You don’t have to wear head to toe floral to feel #floralgoth, but injecting your wardrobe with a bit of floral can help you spice things up and make your closet BLOOM.

The biggest question is always WHERE CAN I GET SUCH BEAUTIFUL FLORAL! And even if it’s not your first question, I’m sure you’ve asked it. Click on the photos below to directly shop the beautiful, fresh flowers I have picked for you (get it?)

Topman

Topman is the best website/store/haven for simple silhouettes that pack a punch. If you’re looking for some hints of floral, you can buy a tee with a black collar or seems. If you’re more into the inconspicuous art of floral, you can always grab some boxers or boxer briefs. If you’re feeling dapper, how about a skinny suit with a floral tie?! The options are endless, my guy.

ASOS

If you haven’t met Asos– you should. If bold, bright floral on black backgrounds are your thing then Asos is definitely a good resource. Prices are cheap and  whether you’re going for some shorts, a bow tie or a backpack, you can find something to add just the right amount of floral to your look.

Okay so now you know two cool places to shop…but what are you suppose to buy? Here  are two of my favorite trends.

FLORAL GOTH

Honestly how could you  not expect me to put a section for my favorite floral trend?! Pair a deep floral with a some black joggers, a pair of dark wash jeans or even some leather pants and BAM. Yeezy  would be proud. Also- how incredible are these floral ties?!? I want one!

OK

Last but not least, my favorite menswear trend of all! I love a good button down and I am an even bigger advocate for floral button downs. Wear them with literally whatever the hell you want (extra points for a mun), maybe carry a dog, and you will feel like a king. Promise.  Check out Esquire HERE for 20 floral shirts you definitely need.

Hope this helps all my men!
Cheers,
Gabriela

SAYONARA 2015, SAN DIEGO AND THE BAHAMAS

So for the past week I’ve bee MIA floating around in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Bahamas on a cruise! I spent January 1st on the beaches of Nassau… if that’s not the boujiest thing I’ve ever said I don’t know what is. I spent the two weeks prior to that bumping around San Diego with the family, relaxing, eating some food, doing some shopping (my parents live in Fashion Valley if that’s any indication to the level of shopping excitement here). I’ve pet some dogs, taken some photos, drank some coffee- I’ve covered all my bases.W1AG8FohBDlIn3_L19Whfjm0kjppuALC4tmluR-XHGgjdrXQy780lQnO13S3hc-0frg24Nemevs1mB038Q1KrU,zNfxDrTYfGySJ6ri5O76exrYLTt7veW17JyN6OVb_lYI’ve been living out of a suitcase for the past three weeks which means my fashion choices have been somewhat limited.  I’ve done my best to have fun and you know, keep up the whole “goth relocated to west coast temporarily” vibe. If I’ve succeed is yours to decide…12523198_10153173012856207_5855025818653762782_n1619497_10153173012286207_2068573352008969265_nAlex took these photos of me one day when we were on the beach. It was absolutely beautiful. It was the first day that it had been overcast, and San Diego had this foreboding darkness sitting in it. It was eerie- the mix of the desert and ocean with the gloom was amazing. 12507624_10153173012381207_1827091296384253912_nI‘m addicted to these things. 12375316_10153137902116207_2082953977803972558_ooOne of the first days we spent on the beach. I felt like a gothic cactus. Fun fact: this beach in Del Mar has a dog beach, and it’s the absolute most beautiful thing I have seen. Literally, just dogs and their humans running around doing sweet pup things. #justdoggythings12360326_10153144023661207_111061716934321945_nI was going for the good ole classic “70’s goth”.  Camel is way close to my skintone and I don’t wear turtlenecks because my neck is really long but you know, rules are meant to be broken and I love this outfit. New year, same me, you feel? 921186_10153146535986207_8366571746141291094_o1California is really just a giant excuse for me to stand on rocks and hug palm trees while wearing all black. San Diego’s been in the high 50’s, low 60’s which is great but has left me wishing I had my entire closet in Columbia at my disposal. 1426256_10153173012621207_2959324186206802823_n1230_10153173012606207_6555715169230511286_nToday’s look aka- the last day in San Diego look. I spent the morning running errands with my mom and then at brunch. I was going to go blog (this!) at Starbucks but came home and decided I was too lazy. Good thing too- this are of San Diego just had a flash flood. Sending love and making sure everyone gets home safe! oooOur first stop on the cruise was in St Thomas, which is hilarious because that’s where my dad was working for a year! He would always watch the cruise ships leave from his condo, wishing he was on one, and now he got to experience it with his family. I wore this metallic romper because I wanted to feel like a space nymph as the clock struck midnight and turned to 2016. I spent my NYE with the family, chugging extra-spicy tequila Bloody Mary’s (kidding mom, I only had three), dancing and celebrating. Not sure if I’m ashamed or proud of the fact that I had enough foresight to take an outfit selfie before I even left the cabin. I’ll go with the latter. 12417920_10153173012571207_823602217330459868_n12509375_10153173012441207_4831893228075218655_nTomorrow I fly back to Columbia to ring in the rest of 2016- my last semester of college and my last month left as 21. 2015- you were amazing to me (and deserve your own post!) Psychedelic Dreams and Sunny Days

Sometimes things are rough, sometimes you end up feeling like you’re in a Woodstock nirvana. Although this December has been unseasonably warm (and people still don’t believe in climate change!), Ivory and I used it to our advantage the other day when we decided to team up with my sister and make some magic.  We found inspiration in photos of face paint from Woodstock and decided the best route to take was to dress up in some 70’s garb, grab some flowers and take photos. The sun was warm and kissing along our cheeks, and there was the slightest breeze. There was one point where I was posing, eyes closed, breathing in the winter air and just felt it. Bliss. Have you ever felt like universe is just cradling you in its palm? That’s what it felt like.  1I think my favorite part about these photos is that they ended up looking like engagement photos or Ivory and I.  Although she’s my best friend and not my fiance, I am so beyond grateful for this beaut. She is just as ethereal on the inside as she is on the outside, and she has such a gift for finding vintage clothing and giving it a new life, I mean, look at these pieces! The icing on the cake was that my friend Cory tagged along and that Alexandra took these photos. So thankful for weirdos who get me. 3 467812131816171514 Vintage dress and slip (on Ivory) and jumpsuit (on me) : Forgotten Feather Vintage/ Necklace (on Ivory): Fossil and Hide / Poncho: Thrifted Sisters/ Shoes: Free People

Self Portraits for Lost Sanity

I would exist on a different planet for you. One so distant and far away, where my skin wouldn’t constantly rip at the seams. I would lose my sanity for it too, I swear, I would mend every broken piece. I think I’ve found a remedy, finally, for all the fallen teeth. One with stardust and poetry that replaces the soles covering your feet. So fix it, break it, I really wouldn’t care. Let’s move to Mars and shed our skin, you’re fallen moons and lucid dreams. 12341607_10153127634041207_2930509622448252603_n12321463_10153127633951207_8456546435437191996_n 12308239_10153127633911207_6708502047471798758_n 112342352_10153127633986207_8145268101572468771_n

THE 6 LESSONS AND 1 GOLDEN RULE I LEARNED FROM MY MOM

November 30th may SEEM like an ordinary day, but alas- tis not. It’s my mom’s birthday-and she’s turning 61! If you don’t have the pleasure of knowing Silvia, you’re missing out. She’s the first one to dance, the first one to laugh, she always looks fabulous (SERIOUSLY- the women is turning 61 and looks better than yours truly) and she is the first one to love with all of her heart. My mom was my introduction to both of my passions- fashion and spirituality. The woman has been using crystals, meditating, doing yoga and the whole nine yards since before it was socially acceptable (hello 80’s). Silvia is where I get my unyielding, burning passion for lipstick, black, (faux) leather, high heels and a KILL EM attitude- so needless to say I am glad this Sagittarius Queen was born all these years ago! 11223337_10153510783296115_1145219058023697366_oMy mom has taught me a lot- so I decided to share my six favorite lessons and the ultimate gold rule she taught  me (get it 61??). So here you go- from Silvia Herstik to you!

1. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF LOOKING (AND FEELING) GOOD

So what seem like a no brainer actually isn’t.  Ever since I was little, my mom has always looked fabulous. It doesn’t matter if she’s wearing an Express track suit or her favorite pair of AG jeans, the woman always looks perfect.  I think this is also a cultural thing- my grandma is the same way. I also thing my family just drank out of the fountain of youth because my god do humans in my family age well. My mom (who was born and raised in Mexico City) has always emphasized that there’s no shame in taking care of yourself- having pride in how you present yourself is good! It’s important and worthy- if it makes you feel good, do it! No shame at all.

2. YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH LIPSTICK

10405346_10152684029866207_2480171621181899319_n

One of my moms favorite stories to tell us (us being the twin and me) is of one of our closest friends Amanda and how she would always look at my mom, wide eyed and starstruck, while we were at temple at Friday night services. Amanda was constantly in awe of my moms perfectly pink lips and loved to play with her lipstick. Me? Not so much. It wasn’t until I was a senior in high school that I realized the power of a perfectly red pout. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. My mom was my first introduction to the wonderful world of MAC and all their fabulous hues. I like to call lipstick my war paint, and these days my lipstick choices also inspire my mom. I like to think of it as fashion karma! She introduced me to the tube of courage and I introduce her to So Chaud and Candy Yum Yum. Mutually beneficial for sure.

3. NEVER EVER APOLOGIZE FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE

10525966_10152571451786115_7985317001687441586_n

My mom is a 5’5 powerhouse with a thick Mexican accent. She graduated from college in three years and got her Masters degree in two. By the time she was 20 she owned her private practice and when she was 27 she came to the United States by herself- the first in her family. Silvia is the original power woman in my book, and if there’s one thing her kick butt work ethic and her fabulous nature has taught me it’s to NEVER apologize for being yourself. My mom is constantly underestimated because shes a woman and she has an accent, and you know what? She constantly proves those people wrong. My mom always dances, always sings, always loves and always gives hugs and kisses. She wears monochromatic outfits and has a really loud laugh and she’s kinda weird and you know what? That’s what makes her stellar! And she has never apologized for that.

4. YOU CAN ALWAYS CHEAT YOUR HEIGHT11188405_10152725438786207_3316539951769336462_n

My mom has always been a heel woman. Ever since I was younger I’ve always admired my mothers vast shoe collection. It wasn’t until I was around 13 or 14 and learned to appreciate style that I truly realized the power that a good shoe holds over mortal women. One of my favorite sounds growing up was the sound of my moms heels clicking on hardwood floor. A close second? The sounds of her acrylic nails tapping. My mother also taught me to appreciate comfort- you can look good and not want to cut off your feet. I’m definitely taking after Mama Herstik, I love my heels and tend to wear them whenever I don’t have class, Columbia doesn’t stand(!) a chance.

 5. THERE IS ALWAYS A REASON TO CELEBRATE12109007_10153042339996207_8033184614363986878_n

Actually literally, having a Mexican Jewish mother means celebrations are abundant. You got an A? CELEBRATE! Poochy (the pup!) got groomed? CELEBRATE! Extreme Home Makeover is on? Cry and then CELEBRATE! One of the most important lessons this fabulous lady has taught me is that it is a million times better to wake up with gratitude for each day and own it! Every day you’re alive and able to celebrate is reason enough. So whether you’re dancing your heart out in your car, or jamming at the club, celebrate. Never apologize for listening to the DJ of your soul!

6. ALWAYS GET A LARGE HOT SAKI WHEN YOU GO OUT TO SUSHI

A very special and IMPORTANT rule shared by my twin Alexandra. This goes back to rule number 5! ALWAYS CELEBRATE! BUT- make sure you have a designated driver if you do! This is for you dad, you’re the real MVP for letting mom get Saki! Also- my mom always sing “Nooobody knowsss the bubbless I’ve seen” when she drinks saki. It’s really cute.

And last but not least….

Silvia’s Golden Rule: YOU HAVE TO LOVE YOURSELF FIRST11043531_10152819335956207_4525293076084156283_n

You have to love yourself before you love anyone else or let anyone else love you::: easily the most important thing that this human has taught me and the golden rule of life. You have to love yourself. It’s not negotiable, it’s not an option. It’s a necessity.  You are worthy of the same love you give to others simply because you exist. Your soul deserves the same respect and admiration as every other soul you love. Loving yourself is a process, its a journey and it takes work, but as soon as you choose to embrace it, everything else becomes easier. You’re not fully receptive to love until you decide you deserve it (which you do!) I remember giving myself a hug in fifth grade in our old apartment building and learning to love myself (and all my weird “flaws”) because my mom had been preaching this rule to me since I was little. I can’t stress enough how much this simple sentiment has impacted to me. I can easily say I wouldn’t be who I am, shaved hair and sass and all, if it weren’t for my mother stressing to me that I MUST love myself. So here I am, passing it on to you! Love yourself! Treat yourself! Amen!

12278893_10153110476556207_1763825539203185300_nSo mom, mommy, mother, madre, mami, Silvia- I love you. You are a wonderful, beautiful, vibrant soul and I am so glad you love selfies as much as I do (literally, whenever any of our family is together you can be sure you’ll here Silvia scream SELFIE!) I hope 61 is the best year yet. You are as beautiful and fabulous and young on the inside as you are on the outside! OH- that could be another lesson! A young soul keeps you young. I could write a million more things you taught me but I’ll keep it short! I love you mami!

XOXO

A Witch in Her Woods

The semester is almost over,  I’m off to California in two days to see my parents in their new place in San Diego, Thanksgiving is on Thursday and I have one semester left before I graduate.  Life is beautiful and dandy, and it’s been a wonderful three and a half years so far in Columbia.

Our school’s magazine, Garnet and Black, even did a little something for me- they featured me in their “Student Spotlight” section for their latest issue. The weirdos over there thought I was cool enough to highlight- so sweet.

So thankful for Kirby Knowlton for the beautiful words, and Josh Thompson for the wonderful photos. You can find the online article HERE.

IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED WHY I OUTFIT SELFIE

It’s a question that’s been on everyone’s mind since my first Lookbook days in 10th grade (or maybe it hasn’t). Gabriela, why the heck do you take outfit photos like everyday. Do you actually think people care?
Well obviously the answer is yes, the entire universe revolves around me. Duh.
Okay so maybe that’s not the truth, but besides the fact that I breathe fashion (ha!) and plan on working in the fashion industry, I also have a very valid reason as to why I get dressed up (almost) every day.

I am a very future thinking Aquarius. Talk to me at any moment and I can list off ten things I have to do before I go to sleep. I can tell you what I’ll be doing this weekend, next month, my goals for post-grad and about a million other things that have not happened or are not happening in the present moment. I recently realized that taking the time each day to pick out an outfit (and later taking a photo of it!) is a way for me to break down each day into something simple. I love clothing, I love makeup and getting dressed up and feeling fabulous. Documenting my clothing choices on the interwebs helps me find the present moment because it forces me to experience the present moment. I live each day through the filter of whatever clothing and makeup I have on, and I’m able to really feel grounded because of that as well. I don’t feel guilty for indulging this way. Why should I? I know what outfits I’ve worn so I won’t repeat them. If someones Instagram feed bothers you- UNFOLLOW THEM! Seriously. No one cares. Promise.

So to all you nay sayers, I say this. I  do not care if you hate that I post like 53 photos on Instagram each day! I don’t care if you hate every single one of my outfits because I do what I do for ME. I wear what I wear for me, and to enjoy each beautiful day as it comes.

Here’s to more outfit selfies and plenty of good clothing.

BF DOES HALLOWEEN 2015

As some of your may or may not know, I work at Hip Wa Zee– aka the coolest costume meets vintage shop located in good ole Columbia, South Caroina. We take Halloween very seriously, duh, and all the employees dress up the last two weeks of October (except all of us are so excited that we start earlier). I’ve been chronicling my costumes on Instagram and Facebook, but decided this was the perfect place to debut all of them.

 LYDIA DEETZ

12 11 10The whole premise was to look like my whole life is a dark room, one big dark room. Thankfully, for most of my costumes, I was able to use clothing I already had. Case in point- this entire look. The shirt and skirt are both from H&M, the bra top is Topshop and my hat is vintage. My new Polaroid camera came in handy (even though it was white) and I just put white makeup along my cheekbones and purple under my eyes to achieve the whole “dead on the inside” thing.

Gaby Had a Little Lamb

10534693_10153053471036207_1896201206495344387_n 792222

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? I am, because I’m a lamb (duh). This turned out to be one of my favorite costumes because I spent the entire day feeling adorable. I wore a leotard from Nasty Gal with some bloomer shorts I got from our store. I paired it with gloves (also from our store) that I covered in cotton balls,  ears I made from felt and cotton balls and a white wig (also from the store). I topped it off with white socks and oxfords from Target and a fresh face of lamb makeup.

Frank N. Furter

18

“I see you shiver with antici…

pation”

So I realized I pretty much dress like this most of the time anyway, except you know, with more clothing. This leather bra and waist cincher from Ivory of Forgotten Feather, shorts are from Hip Wa Zee, thigh highs are from Urban and shoes are from Target. I contoured the cr** out of my face, put on my favorite deep red lippie and called it a day. Oh- but don’t forget the pearls.

Grown Up Wednesday Addams

3 4

I’m a homicidal maniac, they  look just like everyone else.  I was Wednesday all grown up, because you know she totally would have had half her hair shaved off and she would’ve been into witchcraft and tarot. Ivory found me this vintage set over summer, literally the day before I told her I wanted to be Wednesday Addams one day for Halloween (spooky coincidence, no?!).  I paired this with my oxfords and a glowstick axe I painted.

Edgar Allan HOE

5

Because I wanted to dress like Edgar, mustache and all, but I wanted to do my own take on it and make it sexy… then Edgar Allan Hoe was born. I’m still proud of it. I wore fishnets, an old button down from American Threads, my favorite hot pants, a vintage scarf from Ivory and sock garters from Hip Wa Zee. I paired it with my mustache and a wrap around braid. I won a costume contest for this and I’m still excited about it.

White Trash

2

Get it ? I only worked for a few hours between classes and I wanted to see if I could pull this off. The fake cigarette behind my ear was just the icing on the Mountain Dew.

And my Halloween Costume…

Yzma

6yyy

“PULL THE LEVER KRONK”

SO this was pretty much the greatest costume I ever put together pretty much solely because I LOVE YZMA.  Alex and I grew up watching The Emperors New Groove and I always admired Yzma’s charisma and outfits. I got the brilliant idea of dressing up as my favorite lady on Halloween night and I knew I had to follow through. I paired a vintage slip from Ivory with a purple feather (that perfectly matched my sidecut!) and I glued purple fabric on a black collar. Topped it off with Yzma makeup and a thigh garter and I was Gucci.

What were YOU this Halloween?

Glorified Selfies or MAKEUP SECRETS?

Okay guys so the reason I’m doing this is mainly because I haven’t had time to take outfit photos- oops. But it’s also because people ask me about makeup and I never write about it. So here’s a post of glorified selfies with how I got the look.

11705352_10152896868251207_7606832125996285726_nSo remember that one time Kari and I dressed up as Kimye? Yeah so that was pretty much like 50 pounds worth of makeup solely spent on contouring.  I always start with my eyebrows (some days are better than others though folks)

Brows-I use Anastasia’s Dip Brow in Ebony, starting at the edge and working in until about an inch from where I want my brow to end and then i use a q tip to blend out so that last inch sort of  ombres.
Lids- I used Sephora Eye Prime all over my eyelids and grabbed my Naked Basics pallet. Super easy smokey eye- darker color in the outside half of the lid, blending it out from the crease. Put a lighter color on the inside corner(in this case white) and blend from the outer corner in.
Linear-  I do the same cat eye everyday, using ELF liquid eye linear. I just make a line diagonally from the outer corner and clean it up with a q tip.  I line half of the lower eyelid with a black pencil, finish off with Great Lash mascara
Cheeks- I use the same brown from the Naked Pallet to contour my cheeks. Contour cheat- make a fishy face and put a darker color under your cheek bones.
Lips-  Lime Crime lipstick in Coquette.
Not as fabulous as Kim but I can try.

Cheeks- I contoured my cheeks (to no end) using the same Naked Basic Palette.

Lids- I used a warm golden brown and blended in from the outer corner in. I don’t know what brand it is because I got it for my cousins wedding in Mexico YEARS ago from this nifty makeup artist I don’t remember. So thank you for the best color of my life, but god will I miss this shade when it’s gone.
