The Death Card

The thought of the death card in a tarot reading conjures up images of old fortune tellers with a distressed look on their face, promising death to a loved one, or yourself, in the near future. A negative connotation has been linked to this card, after all,  it’s the harrowing “death” card that leaves one with the touch of death on their soul, right?

The Wild Unknown Tarot

The first thing needed to understand the death card is a basic understanding of the tarot itself. The classic tarot deck was originally used as a card game in parts of Europe, like Italy and France, in the 15th century. This was later adopted by occultist and mystics, transforming into the tarot we know today. A classic tarot deck consists of 78 cards, 22 of which are considered the “major arcana” and the other 56 comprising the “minor arcana”. The major arcana are the more important cards, like “The Moon”, “Death”, “Judgment” and “Temperance”. The 56 minor arcana cards are divided into four suites, much like a classic card deck. The four suites, “Pentacles”, “Cups”, “Wands” and “Swords, are each numbered one through ten (the number 1 being the “ace” card), and contain four court cards; “King”, “Queen”, “Knight” and “Page/Jack”. Each card suit holds its own meaning, further coupled with the meaning of each card. The major arcana cards represent major themes and changes in life, and are usually more significant in a reading than the plentiful minor arcana cards.

The Faerie’s Oracle by Brian Froud

Like any form of divination, the tarot isn’t telling you something that is set in stone. The tarot is a map of sorts that reads the energies present in you. It simply draws the lines on a map that has been there all along; you have complete control over the roads you choose to take, the tarot simply lets you know what roads were there to begin with.

So what does the Death card represent? Complete and utter transformation. I chose this card because not only is it a personal favorite, it’s probably the most misunderstood and most frightening card in the deck. This card doesn’t mean someone close to you is going to die, It means one door is closing and another is opening, in the most important sense of the word. Get ready for some major changes and opportunities when you see this card because it has an uncanny ability to appear when new ventures are around the corner. Change is GOOD, and sometimes we have to lose something to gain something even better. Think of it as reincarnation; one thing ends and another begins.

Black is the lack of color, just like death is lack of life. The color black itself repels negativity; it is a strong and powerful color and for me, it encompasses the idea of the Death card. I chose this black dress, picked by the amazing Ivory from Hip Wa Zee,  this hat from H&M and these shoes from Urban Outfitters to create a look that matched my perception of this card. Like the tarot itself, everyone’s interpretation is going to be different. This is my personification of death

Check out my my amazing photographers website HERE and Ivory’s vintage store HERE.

Embrace the unknown with open arms and bask in the glory of its potential.

Macabre Monday: Five Ways to Dress Like a Death King

Happy Monday one and all! While brainstorming something different for today’s post, I remembered I posted something on Instagram with the hashtag of #macabremmonday about a month ago. Well, since today is Menswear Monday after all, I decided to dedicate my Macabre Monday to my death kings out there. I love being able to wear all black and feel powerful and i honestly think a well dressed man in black is incredibly sexy. Today’s post features five simple ways to channel your inner Edgar Allen Poe!

 Classy and Casual

Start with the basics. A pair of jeans that fits well (not too tight, not too loose), a black short sleeve button up and some nice black suede boots or oxfords. Add a motorcycle style leather jacket, a leather briefcase and a thick beanie; I love the contrast of the slightly dressed up bag with the chunky beanie. Grab a book and a black and gold accented watch, and you look classy and casual and ready to take on whatever realm you choose.

Dapper on the Go

If you’re anything like me, you still take time to get ready for your 8:30 am class. I know this is unusual but I promise it doesn’t take more than 20 minutes to look decent for an early class and i can promise you’ll feel more prepared and confident for the day ahead. My biggest advice is to pick your outfit out the night before. Start like before with a  good pair of jeans, but in the cold winter months I would trade a button up short sleeve for a thick sweater, adding a coat and some boots once more. Leather accents, such as these boots, wallet and backpack, help you dress like a death king and still be comfortable and prepared for the day (or 8:30 stat). Invest in a killer watch and you’ll never be late,  even to outrun death himself.

Dressed for the Heavens

Every man should have pieces that make him feel like a king. I adore a well fitted suit on a man, my preference is of the skinny variety. If you have to be more formal for an event, a monochromatic black look with gold accents is easy and so classy it hurts. I started with this button up dress shirt and added some skinny trouser pants. I thought that a skinny tie would pop nicely with a vintage gold tie clip, and opted for this instead of a bow tie. I added a men’s blazer instead of a classic suit jacket to change the look into something a little bit more wearable. Change the details to something unexpected; add some leather work boots and sunglasses in a unique shape or style. Again, a black and gold watch adds the perfect pop, and some gold cuff links wouldn’t hurt either .

Top of the Class

To wear the title of “Death King” means being inspired by many dimensions, many lives and many stores..including the beloved Topman. Topman has an endless bounties of macabre pieces that can be worn and worn through season after season. Bundling up in black basics is always a good option when you want to feel and look good. Start with some jeans and a long sleeve tee, add a black hoodie, leather jacket and some boots to stay classic and comfortable. Add details like a woven belt and a weird beanie and you’ll stand out in the best way possible. Topmen don’t blend in, after all.

The Laziest Death King

People tend to have this crazy idea that being comfortable and lazy means you can’t dress well. Well. I am here to relieve your distress and tell you that’s not true. The biggest tip I have for my lazy fashion loving men is to buy and invest in pieces that are comfortable but still wearable. Buy some black Vans, some sweatpants that are cool, a graphic pullover.  Have a few pieces, like a good hoodie or some really nice worn in jeans, that you can turn to when you slept too much or are sick (read, hungover) or just lazy and still want to look good. I have some tee shirts from Pull and Bear that I know I can wear with some leggings and a big sweater and be cozy in. Grab some cool sweats, a varsity jacket, a graphic pullover and a sassy beanie and I promise you, you’ll look like the death king you are (even with no effort)

Inspired by The Twilight Zone

Easily one of my favorite shows, The Twilight Zone is easily the best to watch when you want to dive into the subconscious mind by going into an alternate universe. The show features vignette style episodes that deal with a variety of macabre topics including aliens, time travel and apocalypses. I grew up watching this show with my parents, and I have many memories watching it on on New Years when they have their marathon on Syfy,

The season change, or rather “season change” in Columbia, has made me want to do nothing more than curl up in bed with hot chocolate or coffee and watch this show. The fact that the show is black and white (it started in the early 60’s) just makes it better; the old school glamour of this show is unparalleled. Rod Serling is the mastermind, and narrator, behind The Twilight Zone; he  has also been featured on Breathing Fashion because he is so classy and dapper.

I couldn’t resist creating a few looks inspired by some of my favorite episodes.

The Number 12 Looks Just Like You

In this episode everyone goes through “the transformation” when they turn 18. Like the book The Uglies, everyone looks the same; as soon as you’re of age, you undergo surgery to look like one of the number of models there are to pick from. But what happens when you think you’re beautiful before the transformation? What if you don’t want the surgery? These are the sort of problems that arise in this episode of The Twilight Zone

Twenty Two

In this episode, Liz, a “dancer” is hospitalized for being delirious and having reoccurring dreams. In this dream, she wakes up suddenly, only to break a glass, hear the clock ticking and hear footsteps down the hall of the hospital. When she gets up to follow the footsteps she sees a nurse disappear into the elevator. When Liz gets on the elevator to the bottom floor, she gets of and she walks down the hall only to be greeted by the same nurse who’s standing in front of the morgue and who greets her with one sentence; “there’s room for one more honey”. What exactly does this mean? You’ll have to watch the episode to find out.

Come Wander With Me

In this episode of the show, a man drives to the woods in an attempt to search for inspiration for his newest folk hit. He finds a guitar shop and a woman with a haunting voice. He hears this siren singing a beautiful song and he tries to steal it from her. Things don’t go as planned, and how could they, in The Twilight Zone?

What’s your favorite episode?

Dear Breathing Fashion family,

It’s been four years!! Four crazy, wonderful, amazing years. Four years ago I accepted the journey of starting my own fashion blog, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There have been many ups and downs, but I am so proud to say that I never even let the idea of quitting enter my mind. As Breathing Fashion has grown, i have grown with it. I have discovered my voice, my passion for writing, my own personal style, and my dedication to what I hope to make a career in. Over the past year especially, I have collaborated with some amazing photographers, designers, brands and even been featured in a magazine. I have met some incredible people whose complete and utter faith in what I do has helped me more than they  know. I have established a solid reader base and found a layout that makes sense. I can’t get over how blessed I am to have had such a great run thus far. The future is bright, my loves, BF has big things coming!

I had a celebratory photo shoot, and am so pleased with how they turned out!

Here’s to the NEXT four years

Death Queen Style Sunday

Hello Breathing Fashionistas, I am so beyond glad to be back and to be, gradually, getting into the blogging grind! I am so excited for the year ahead of me, and I’m so excited to be back in Columbia.  I am also so excited to announce that my amazing friend Morgan Epperson, find her site HERE, is going to be collaborating with me every Sunday as my in house Sunday style photographer! Morgan is not only incredibly sweet and lovable, she is also incredibly talented and a fellow Fashion Board member. Today, we shot in my backyard, yes I have train tracks and a graveyard in my backyard, and I’m so happy with how amazing the photos turned out! I felt like today was a perfect day for a gauzy tank top, Carven inspired shorts and my Lita’s;  proper death queen attire

I keep forgetting I don’t have class tomorrow, which is super nice, and I’ve spent today with my twin at brunch and relaxing. I get to go to yoga later, spend the night with some friends and I’m looking forward to what the night holds!

Although I wish I could cloak myself in a robe of tulips, I can’t. I can do the next best thing though and dress myself in floral print and tulip skirts in warm, happy colors. I saw this beautiful faux tweed tulip skirt at H&M and was so excited when it fit like a glove. I paired my skirt with a cropped, dainty, floral print top and some delicate gold jewelry. I grabbed some Vince Camuto flats and a quilted chain bag from Zara to finish the look.

Gabriela Goes Tropical PT 1

I’m BACK!!! it’s been 10 days and I am so excited to finally have my computer and completely overload with photos from my vacation. First things first, I had so much fun traveling around on the biggest cruise ship in the world, Oasis of the Seas, with my mom’s side of the family. Getting to spend time with my family was amazing in itself, throw in tropical destinations like Haiti, Jamaica and Cozumel and I was on cloud nine!

We arrived in Florida (where we boarded the ship) the day before the cruise took off. We got some lunch, relaxed a little bit and then met our family for dinner. The next day we boarded the ship bright and early, relaxed, unpacked and explored, A day at sea the next day was followed by our first stop, Haiti. The ship was giant; it was literally a city, and with more than 6,000 passengers it was no wonder the Oasis is the largest ship in the world. We ate, explored, saw Hairspray and then went to dinner. We pretty much took it easy the first couple nights.

The first night on the ship was casual!

I wore:

Dress: BCBGMaxazaria Dress

Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Necklace: Forever 21

Cuff: Nasty Gal

Purse: Zara

My beautiful twin sister wore a textured romper with a woven belt and gold accented sandals. I love the Grecian vibe she had going on that night!

The ship was HUGE! The Boardwalk level was adorable; it was carnival themed and featured everything from a “fortune teller” to a carousel. The blue waters were so lovely to just sit and stare at, it was so peaceful and vast.

Shorts, Shirt and Necklace: Forever 21

Cuff: Nasty Gal

That night’s dinner was Captain’s Night. The most formal evening of the whole week, everyone dressed to the nines and I had the pleasure of wearing my favorite BCBGMaxazaria dress.

Dress and Earrings: BCBGMaxazaaria

Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Purse: Zara

My beautiful twin looked like a babe!

Dress: BCBGMaxazaria

Shoes: Steve Madden

I’ll be updating about the rest of my trip this week so make sure you check back!

Sunday Style: Starbucks and Grey’s Anatomy

Happy Sunday dear readers! First and foremost I hope you noticed BREATHING FASHION’S NEW HOME! I am finally done switching over to wordpress!! I still have photos for some collection reviews to transfer, so bear with me! I am so excited that I finally was able to finish up the new site since I’ve been working on it since April. Anyway, I hope you enjoy all the new tabs and links and what not!

Today was lovely and simple and spent with my parents at breakfast running chores and later with some friends, relaxing. I got to spend some time with the amazing Miranda and we went to Starbucks, snapped some photos and watched Grey’s Anatomy…typical. I’m leaving for vacation soon and can’t wait to share what it will be like! How crazy and bizarre is it that it’s already mid July.. don’t understand it.

Style Sunday: Black, White and Yoga

It’s Sunday! That means this week is drawing to a close and another week is about to begin. I had a wonderful weekend filled with spending time with my family and friends who I haven’t seen in a while. I love being able to catch up with friends I miss when I’m away at school. I ate some yummy food, went to yoga with my mom, spent time transferring posts over to WordPress and drinking a lot of coffee. It’s been disgusting and dreary so the weather has called for pants and sweaters. I’ve also been sitting in Starbucks a lot, and the air conditioning has also called for warmer clothes!

Miranda of High Voltage Blog is my favorite photographer, and she snapped these photos while we were hanging out. We got to catch up from her Miami vacation and just take silly photos together.

Tank Top and Sweater: Loehamans

Pants: BCBGeneration

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Purse: Urban Outfitters

Spiked Cuff: Nasty Gal

Miranda also snapped some photos of me whipping out some yoga poses!

Woman Power Wednesday: Ashley Laderer

Hello all! I’m sorry that I haven’t been A+ on blogging, I’ll be putting up yesterday’s post today. Anyway, it’s Wednesday and that means I get to feature another amazing lady! Today’s babe is Ashley of Fashion Unicorn! I first found Ashley because she started following me on instagram… it’s been true love ever since. Ashley is a FIT student who is literally living my dream. She’s studying fashion merchandising, currently interning at Victoria Secret and besides living in the coolest city, she was even in an All Time Low music video. Ashley has the style of a goth siren, weaving dark elements into her girly style while still maintaining the perfect high fashion vibe. Ashley is the kind of fashion powerhouse that you can feel; you don’t even have to know her to be able to tell that she’s gonna make an impact on the fashion industry.  Besides having a fierce personal sense of style, Ashley also has the perfect haircut. I think she and I should just start a mob of fashion loving, half shaved hair babes.

I asked Ashley about blogging, working for Victoria’s Secret, her personal style and more!

My style
I like to channel really grunge or goth elements and mix that with really girly things. I only wear things that I’m comfortable in, and I like to wear things that really show off my body. My mom told me, if you got it, flaunt it! I love any excuse to dress up, and I love taking themes or one bit of inspiration and going all out!

How I got into fashion
I’ve loved fashion since I was super little and dressed up my barbies. I even remember I shaved one of my Barbie’s heads (ironic). I would love to put together outfits and have photoshoots with my friends. Also, my friend Deena and I had our own little magazine called Think Pink when we were in 2nd grade! On top of all of that, I have an older sister who I totally looked up to style-wise. I would get her hand-me-downs before they fit me and I would love to copy her!

How I ended up at FIT
It’s actually very weird how I ended up at FIT. I applied to a bunch of schools, with a major in Fashion Design. I got accepted to Pratt Institute, Parsons, and Cornell (don’t ask). I actually got denied to FIT! I went to Pratt, which was my number one anyway. But, when I got there, I realized that fashion design- the sewing and all that- was not for me. So, I reapplied to FIT for Fashion Merchandising Management, got accepted, and here I am!

My Internship
I’m interning at Victoria’s Secret in the web merchandising team. I’m working there full time and learning a lot. Basically, what I do is help out with the behind the scenes stuff of what goes on with the website. I get to go to big meetings and help out with a lot of important things. Everyone there is so nice. Not to mention, the building is sick! There are huge wall murals of the VS Angels everywhere. Talk about eye candy.

Favorite part of blogging
My favorite part of blogging is when people tell me that they actually read my blog and they enjoy it or that they use me as style inspiration! It’s so flattering and really makes me want to keep doing what I’m doing. Getting packages in the mail with fun things from designers or companies that are starting out is absolutely awesome too, of course!

We’re kinda similar! Check out Ashley’s blog!

Burberry Prorsum Resort 2013 Collection Review

If there’s one omen in this collection, it’s this; below the knee is the new mini. There’s no denying it; Burberry has embraced the new hem for the season and done it remarkably well. The fitted silhouette is still feminine and alluring because of the textures, sheen and lace detailing that are added to each piece. Instead of looking overtly mature, Christopher Bailey has created the perfect summertime look that’s easy, sexy and natural. The  sheer fabrics make this collection perfect for summer; the lace knicker-showing skirts are sultry without being over the top showy and the length makes them lust worthy for even the most conservative Burberry Prorsum fan. The brocade patterns and classic trench-coat accents keep the Burberry theme throughout the entire collection. Young and vibrant, this collection was created for the girl who you can’t stop thinking about. Bailey has done it again, delivering not what we want, but what we NEED for Resort 2013.

What do you think about this collection?!

High Voltage Blog X El Bambino Lookbook Pt II

As promised, I have listed some new crowns over at El Bambino! I’m also releasing some new photos of my collaboration with Miranda  of High Voltage Blog. As you all must know by now, I’m incredibly inspired by those of the other realm. I draw an immense amount of inspiration from the fay, or faeries. Miranda took the vision I had for the shoot and added to it, creating something incredible

What are YOU inspired by that’s out of this world?

High Voltage Blog X El Bambino

I’m so excited to announce my collaboration with Miranda of High Voltage Blog!! She just opened the doors to her own Etsy shop of the same name, and asked me to help model and style a shoot. I happily obliged and asked if she would mind if I could make a lookbook out of it by pairing some new crowns I made for El Bambino with her vintage finds. We planned it out and spent the day catching up, grabbing some (veggie) sushi, laughing, and basking in the incredible summer air. Check out her Etsy for some of the pieces we styled!! I’ll be posting 7 new crowns on my Etsy, El Bambino, within the next week and I will post a link once they’re up

Part II of the collaboration coming when I put the new crowns online

Sunday Style: Disney Princess gone Macabre

Happy Sunday, my loves! It’s been one of those days where I’m so extremely, overwhelmingly, grateful for the incredible friends I have by my side. Started the day up with some lunch, and ended it with shopping, getting a couple new cartilage piercings (throwback, anyone?), making some pasta and a new crown, and ending it with coffee and an impromptu photoshoot. I felt like a death queen faerie empress today, and I can’t say I didn’t like it.

Dress and Tights: mom’s closet

Shawl: Urban Outfitters

Socks: H&M

Shoes: DSW

Flower Crown: (a part of my soon-to-be-released lookbook/collaboration)

I Sing the Body Electric

I’ve been making some floral crowns to sell and decided that “Macabre meets Steinbeck” would be an interesting, and very Gaby, way to show them off. It was honestly the perfect weather for this kind of shoot, and I am incredibly happy with how these turned out!

If you want to order a crown, you can off my Etsy, or email me at for a customized crown and I will list it on my etsy! They start at $9 (without shipping), and look like the one below.

PANTS! Find the look HERE on lookbook and HYPE HYPE HYPE! I have the amazing opportunity to win a guest blogger spot on Volcom’s website!

Been to long…

Wow it has been forever since I’ve actually made a post and I apologize completely! I’ve been cascaded by vacation and camp and now I can finally focus on fashion again.

First off, I have a new look on lookbook. Find it HERE

I is for…

Issa. Fall RTW 2010

Leather, graphic prints, fur and draping are all done extravagantly done in this collection. However, this collection also seems outdated, as if it could have been done last fall. There isn’t anything quite remarkable about this collection. The clothing is beautiful, but the ideas are not innovative or new, and isn’t that what fashion is all about?

I ‘m back!

                    Dear world,

I am so sorry for ignoring you!!!! My life has felt incomplete without the simple task of sitting down and typing! There comes such a great feeling after updating my blog. Ahh the feeling of fashion! Anyway, part of the reason for my lack of blogging was being sucked up in the fiery wrath of finals, which are now over. So…

Both of these are on lookbook, find them HERE.

More tomorrow
