The Death Card

The thought of the death card in a tarot reading conjures up images of old fortune tellers with a distressed look on their face, promising death to a loved one, or yourself, in the near future. A negative connotation has been linked to this card, after all,  it’s the harrowing “death” card that leaves one with the touch of death on their soul, right?

The Wild Unknown Tarot

The first thing needed to understand the death card is a basic understanding of the tarot itself. The classic tarot deck was originally used as a card game in parts of Europe, like Italy and France, in the 15th century. This was later adopted by occultist and mystics, transforming into the tarot we know today. A classic tarot deck consists of 78 cards, 22 of which are considered the “major arcana” and the other 56 comprising the “minor arcana”. The major arcana are the more important cards, like “The Moon”, “Death”, “Judgment” and “Temperance”. The 56 minor arcana cards are divided into four suites, much like a classic card deck. The four suites, “Pentacles”, “Cups”, “Wands” and “Swords, are each numbered one through ten (the number 1 being the “ace” card), and contain four court cards; “King”, “Queen”, “Knight” and “Page/Jack”. Each card suit holds its own meaning, further coupled with the meaning of each card. The major arcana cards represent major themes and changes in life, and are usually more significant in a reading than the plentiful minor arcana cards.

The Faerie’s Oracle by Brian Froud

Like any form of divination, the tarot isn’t telling you something that is set in stone. The tarot is a map of sorts that reads the energies present in you. It simply draws the lines on a map that has been there all along; you have complete control over the roads you choose to take, the tarot simply lets you know what roads were there to begin with.

So what does the Death card represent? Complete and utter transformation. I chose this card because not only is it a personal favorite, it’s probably the most misunderstood and most frightening card in the deck. This card doesn’t mean someone close to you is going to die, It means one door is closing and another is opening, in the most important sense of the word. Get ready for some major changes and opportunities when you see this card because it has an uncanny ability to appear when new ventures are around the corner. Change is GOOD, and sometimes we have to lose something to gain something even better. Think of it as reincarnation; one thing ends and another begins.

Black is the lack of color, just like death is lack of life. The color black itself repels negativity; it is a strong and powerful color and for me, it encompasses the idea of the Death card. I chose this black dress, picked by the amazing Ivory from Hip Wa Zee,  this hat from H&M and these shoes from Urban Outfitters to create a look that matched my perception of this card. Like the tarot itself, everyone’s interpretation is going to be different. This is my personification of death

Check out my my amazing photographers website HERE and Ivory’s vintage store HERE.

Embrace the unknown with open arms and bask in the glory of its potential.

Sunday Style: A Sweet Sample

I posted a preview of my most recent collaboration last week, and I couldn’t resist posting a couple more! I had the immense pleasure of shooting with Mary DeCrescenzio  for this set, an amazing photographer who I met while working at Hip Wa Zee. We shot three looks and are currently in the process of another collaboration which should be really great.

I’ve been keeping the theme of this collaboration secret, and I can’t hold it in any longer! These three looks were all based off of tarot cards. I’ve been reading cards since I was about 13, when I got the classic Raider Waite deck in a kit, and the cards have been part of my life ever since.. I am going to be incorporating spirituality and fashion more and more since both are my passions, and I thought this was a good way to start. Anyway, I don’t want to give too much away, so enjoy the preview, and more details (and explanation of the tarot) to come!

I can’t wait to release the entire collaboration and explain what each cards means to me. I hope everyone is having a fabulous Sunday!

Go check out Mary’s work HERE and check back for more photos!

Five Reasons Every Man Should Practice Yoga

Just like it’s no new fact that I love wearing black, it’s no new fact that I love yoga. One of my long term goals includes being a yoga teacher, and another includes traveling to India to deepen my practice, immerse myself in the culture and hopefully volunteer as well. So, this Monday morning, I am giving every Death King out there five reasons why he should practice yoga. These five reasons are nothing more than just the tip of the iceberg, but we all have to start somewhere!

1. Because you are NOT flexible

I love this meme because it’s so accurate. The wonderful thing about yoga is that it HELPS with flexibility. You don’t have to be able to touch the your toes or put your foot behind your head, but who knows, maybe after a steady practice those things will happen! Yoga couples alignment, stretching, breath and philosophy to create flexibility in your mind, body and soul. Believe me, you’ll be sore after your first yoga class, but it will be well worth it.

2. Because it will Help you Breathe

Well, that doesn’t necessarily sound so promising, we’re constantly breathing after all, but let me explain. There are many, many different schools of yoga, but almost every one emphasizes the breath. Different breathing patterns, called pranayama’s, help you in different ways; some calm, some energize, some just help to restore. The most common breathing technique is called ujjayi or ocean breadth and it helps to center and restore and is used in many yoga classes. The breadth is performed by tensing the muscles at the back of the throat and breathing out through the nose, like you’re fogging up a mirror. Paying attention to your breath automatically helps turn your drishti, or gaze, inward; there is stillness and softness that wasn’t present before. By paying attention to the breath while performing the physical postures, a sort of consciousnesses is able to manifest, and there’s a presence that wasn’t there before. This, in turn, carries of the mat and is something you can utilize everyday. Your practice on the mat is a reflection of your life off the mat, after all .

3. Because Your Man Butt will Look Really Really Good

Your butt will look great, your body will start to look great, and you’ll feel good. Personally, I love a man with a nice butt, and yoga will definitely give you a nice butt… Yoga means union, and there’s an obvious connection between a happy mind and happy body and soul. The idea behind the series of physical postures, or asanas, is that when the body is active, the mind is quite. The original yogis knew the opposite was true as well; when the body is quite the mind is active. Yoga uses the energetic body and the physical body to strengthen one another; the whole idea of a physical yoga practice is to get your body ready for meditation, or savasana. Don’t be fooled though; a vinyasa style class is no easy feat, it will metaphorically kick your butt, but alas, it will also physically tone it along with the rest of your body.

4. Because There is a Yoga Class for Everyone

Whether you want a physically engaging class or a restoring one, there is a school of yoga for everyone. Love structure and want a class that is like meditation in motion? Try Ashtanga, a school that has a set of series and involves the same postures in almost every class. After  you become familiar with the postures and terminology it becomes moving meditation guided by the breath. Want a yoga practice based around the concept of alignment? Try Iyengar or Anusara. Want a faster paced yoga class that flows from one posture to the next? Try a Vinyasa class. There is something for everyone, find more information about what resonates with you HERE.

5. Because Yoga is a Spiritual Practice with Physical Benefits, and Not the Other Way Around

The thing with yoga is that YES, it will help tone your inner thighs, shape up your butt, strengthen your back and core, it will help you gain arm muscles and have better postures… those are all true.  But the practice of yoga, when done with integrity, is a lifelong practice that follows you. The physical practice is 1/6th of yoga.. it is only one measly limb. Yoga is one of the most incredible gifts you can give yourself because it will help you to dwell in your soul in a way you didn’t know was possible. I think it’s incredibly attractive when a man takes care of himself, physically and spirituality, and having witnessed the benefits of yoga firsthand, I urge everyone to start a practice and see the benefits themselves. It takes a true man to understand the importance of taking care of himself, and let me tell you, yoga is an amazing way to do it.

I urge everyone, male or female, to get on a mat and see how it changes you. Yoga has many, many more benefits than I was able to list, but I hope I gave you an idea of how much positive change it’s capable of.

PS: These yoga memes are of Woody Woodrow from Our Last Night. When I first met him we bonded over yoga, and two years later, he’s certified as a yoga instructor and practicing yoga around the world while touring with OLN. After two years of talking about doing yoga together, we finally were able to when he OLN was in Atlanta at the Masquerade. If you’re a fan of them and want to get your vinyasa on before a show, ask him to help and he’ll be more than happy to do so.

New York Fashion Week Recap

Fall 2014 fashion week is almost over, and what a beautiful run it has been. Some incredible collections have hit the runways, ans waves of amazing new trends are bound to hit the streets. Asymmetry, fur in unexpected places, mismatched patterns.. I’m very excited to see what the next few months hold.

BCBG Max Azria

With new age color blocking and fur in unexpected places, BCBG holds true to its wearable high fashion nature and creates a collection that is body conscious in a new way. With virtually no fitted pieces, this collection accents the woman wearing it by leaving a little to the imagination.

Charlotte Ronson

A mix of modern hippie, rockabilly and slightly punk styles, Charlotte Ronson’s collection is on ode to the future, inspired by years past. The sort of dark meets light feel of this collection is evident through sheer layering and black on black looks that seem new in the context of the show.

Jill Stuart

Reminiscent of Saint Laurent of seasons past,  Jill Stuart was the perfect mix of structure and sex appeal. Both extremes made their appearance on the runway, from daring netted dresses that left little to the imagination, to oversize boxy coats that hit the lower calf. No matter how covered up the women were, they always looked sultry and seductive; an ode to the idea that sometimes more is less and less is more.

Rebecca Minkoff

By pairing pieces in innovative ways, Rebecca Minkoff has created a street style collection that is attainable and lust worthy. The sort of easy breezy looks we would all love to live in, Minkoff has a penchant for effortless downtown style. Details like thick beanies and sheer paneling in unexpected places help to create a collection that is both memorable and wearable.

ICB

With a neutral color pallet and many differing aesthetics woven throughout the collection, ICB’s show is one for the insatiable woman who lives life on the edge. Whether inspired by a more structural and origami style piece, or a leather tracksuit style, there is easily something to suit everyone’s desire throughout this show. This collection weaves together interesting silhouettes and darker themes to form the perfect fashion week web; high fashion and macabre in all its glory.

Prabal Gurung Fall 2014 Collection Review

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and the fashion forward are hitting the pavement, or their computers, for glances of what the most noted fashion designers in the world are sending down their runways. Prabal Gurung showed his Fall 2014 Collection this past Saturday, and it is easily one of the best collections of the season thus far.

Asymmetry seemed to be the underlying force with just about every look in this collection. Boxy tops and sweaters were paired with asymmetrical skirts with gauzy draped tails. Fur was used in innovative ways throughout the show, especially as an accent. Whether it was lining a coat or dress or on a bolero style jacket, fur was in unexpected places and was even featured in unexpected colors. Strappy gladiator style sandals furthered the idea of asymmetry even more; the juxtaposition of heavy winter furs with short, thigh baring silted skirts and gladiators was refreshing. Cape style coats made an appearance, as did art inspired prints in burnt oranges, slate grays and navy blues. With prints that imitated splatter paint, marbling and sponging popping up on coats, sweaters, skirts and even trousers, there is no doubt that fashion and art can’t be one in the same.

Unexpected combinations were abundant throughout. Calf bearing skirts with thigh high slits were paired with button up long sleeved blouses, taking a more modern approach to a sultry style. Sweatshirts were even made high fashion with the likes of asymmetrical staggered fur accents in dove grays and ice-y whites.  Burnt oranges, crimson reds, stark whites, navy blues and midnight blacks all added high intensity to this decadent collection. Textured tops in these vibrant hues even resembled avant-garde snakes wrapped around their next prey, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “dressed to kill”.

This collection wrapped up with stunning gowns featuring cutouts in unpredictable places. All in all this collection is one of the best to hit the New York runways this far, breathing a new and exciting life into what the fall season will hold. There’s nothing quite like being able to revamp your wardrobe, fashion does thrive off of change after all.

Viktor & Rolf Spring 2014 Couture Collection Review

This collection is every fashion-adoring-ballerina’s dream. Beautiful leotard style dresses in the precious powder pinks and peaches accented with hand drawn “tattoos” define this collection. Inspired by Viktor & Rolf’s new fragrance Bonbon, this collection was modeled by the Dutch National Ballet. The constant reminder of the so called dance between fashion and every other facet of art is perfectly shown by the ballerinas grace and Viktor & Rolf’s talent; an energizing duet that helps to shorten the schism between the two worlds. The aesthetics in this collection are a modern approach to a classic art. Silhouettes are reinvented with skin tight nude fabric designed to blend in to look like skin. Faux chest pieces, bow, and arm tattoos all add another accent to an innovative couture collection. The simplicity and elegance in each of these pieces are so wearable and are more than ready to hit the streets…or the stage.

Carven Pre-Fall 2014 Collection Review

Carven has a penchant for creating pieces that emanate the effortless, proper and prim style of the French. Crave-able capes in camels, structured blazers in black, wool lined coats in scrumptious tangerines, and the perfect clog style sling back all shape this tough-prep look that Carven so seamlessly embodies. Paintbrush patterns and black and white plaids add another element of non-conformity to this rather preppy style collection. There’s a certain strength to designer who is innovative in their collection each season, while still maintaining the style and integrity of their house. Henry manages to capture that which is Carven; the strong, structured and sexy appeal of an effortlessly avant-garde woman, in each and every season. There is also a certain comfort in being able to return to your favorite house while knowing you won’t be disappointed. Carven is one of those houses for me; a house that’s cloaked in the promise of inspiration through each and every look. This collection holds its own with its variety of structured aesthetics and with its punk and prep love child looks, it certainly is everything a Carven fan could crave.

Menswear Monday; Zachary Kent Adauto

Happy Monday, one and all! I haven’t featured a man for Menswear Monday in a good bit, so I decided to feature one of my best friends, and my fashion prodigy, Zack. It’s interesting how people who you don’t expect to be relevant in your life become relevant later on down the road. Zack and I would see each other at local shows all the time about three years ago, but it wasn’t until about a year and a half ago, the summer before my freshman year at college, that we truly became friends and started hanging out. Fast forward to present day and Zack is truly one of my best guy friends. Besides having a great sense of style, Zack has a spastic and happy personality, and even though he may not seem like it, he has a soft and beautiful heart. Zack loves telling people I am responsible for his sense style, and although I have helped style him on occasion, I think he needs to give himself some more credit.

If more men dressed like Zack, then I would be a very happy girl

Dior Spring 2014 Couture Collection Review

There’s something innovative and fresh about a couture show that can walk between award show and pret-a-porter. In Dior’s latest collection, texture and cutout work are key in encapsulating a futuristic garden party feel. Simon’s has pieced together a collection that is inspired by movement, both figuratively and literally, that is represented by interesting silhouettes that both veil and embody the sexuality of the female form. Simmons has seamlessly introduced new silhouettes, along with classic ones, into this collection by reviving them with cut outs and fabrics that are translucent and structured. Even the monochromatic looks tease the eye with subtle floral like webs, and the soft mints, pinks and creme color pallet are only accented by the shock of stark black and whites.

This collection feels young and fresh, wearable and enticing. The modern collection doesn’t feel too futuristic, nor does it draw too much in the past. It’s even more electrifying to think each piece was handmade, sculpted to perfection to be shown on the runway.

Sunday Style: Books and Pastel Cats

I spent today at home relaxing until evening, bundled up on this cold Sunday and then I got dinner with a couple of friends and my twin before we headed to the bookstore. I could sit and enjoy Barnes and Nobles for hours and hours. I am so thankful my parents fostered a love of reading into my sister and I, it’s easily something that influenced my life. I gathered up Vogue Paris Collections, British Vogue and a couple of books and spent an hour in peace.

Sweater and Necklace: Forever 21/ Skirt and Faux Fur Jacket: H&M/ Boots: Dolce Vita/ Purse: Zara

I threw on what’s becoming my new favorite coat over a sweet lil’ lace number. I love the mixture of the dainty skirt with the big cat print. I felt very chic and simple but I do wish I pulled the skirt to sit a bit higher on my waist for these photos!

Sweater: Moschino Chip and Chick/ Skirt: Red Valentino/ Coat: My Wardrobe/ Bag: Boohoo Beth/ Lipstick: YSL/ Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Throw on a cat sweater, a tulle skirt and some chunky black boots. The pastels and black contrast perfectly and work with a bright orange lip in the best ways.

How are you spending your Sunday?

More regular, AND BETTER, updates to come! Lots of fun shoots in the future.

Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2014 Collection Review

Androgyny at its finest, this menswear inspired Pre-Fall collection has new and interesting silhouettes to keep the mind and eye happy. This collection starts off with an original take on a men’s suit by adding coral patent straps and royal blue athletic inspired collar and reinventing the silhouette. Structured pieces like oversize jackets and pleated wide legged trousers all work the androgynous style, but thigh high boots in leather and drapey tops in mixed fabrics add layers of sexiness. Nothing in this collection is truly fitted to the body (minus the exception of a beautiful gray woven dress and skirt), but details like mesh necklines, cutout patterns in tops and short hems make sure you know there’s still a strong and sexy woman wearing the clothes. Androgyny is reinvented in this collection in looks like a structured  white coat layered over a gorgeous camel turtleneck and paired with a short hem and thigh high boots to add a sexy twist to an otherwise conservative outfit. The details in this collection are beautiful; from the mix of leathers and woven silvery gray fabrics to the saddle shoes to the pops of color from drawstrings. This collection is easily one for the woman who likes to blur her own lines.

What do you like about this androgynous style collection?

What I’m Wearing Wednesday; Mid November Daze

I love November for the most part. I love that it gets chilly and that I can celebrate Thanksgiving. I love the fact that for at least one day a year, I can sit down with my family and be thankful for everything the universe has so graciously given me, the fact that  I have to drive home for Thanksgiving makes it all the better. This year, my Thanksgiving break is going to be busy and lovely! I am heading home Tuesday, seeing Paramore Wednesday with one of my best friends, celebrating the holiday Thursday and then celebrating my mom’s birthday which is Saturday the 30th. Not to mention that Hannukah starts on Thanksgiving! Yeesh, what a busy four days! Since I am a planner, I knew I had to squeeze in the shoot that I missed this Sunday! Well, the amazing Morgan was gracious enough to shoot with me yesterday. I whipped out my trustee white wig that I got at Hip Wa Zee, my new Topshop leather leggings and my Zara cropped long sleeve striped shirt for a simple outfit.

Shirt and Purse: Zara// Leggings and Bracelet : Topshop// Watch: Michael Kors// Jacket: Express/ Socks and Shoes: Target// Wig: Hip Wa Zee// Necklace: Forever 21.

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 Collection Review

Perhaps not the most cohesive collection, Burberry Prorsum’s Spring 2014 show was all sorts of sexy and sultry. Opening with sets of sheer floral lace skirts and shirts in muted pastels, and later transitioning to a more neutral color pallet  in more substantial fabrics, Bailey definitely kept this season interesting. Proportion and draping were everything, whether it was an oversize, cape like camel coat or leather skirt with cutouts imitating lace. High waisted skirts ending below the knees, sheer or not, were the ultimate leg lengthener and seem quite sexy when paired with a cropped top. The classic trench was reinvented and reconstructed; the only truly recognizable trait was the length and fabric. Large, geometric appliques made an appearance on skirts and coats alike and brought back a baroque sort of theme in a modern and elegant context. Pearly pastels, lace and just the right mix of soft and structure all conglomerated to sculpt another note worthy Burberry Prorsum collection.

Belstaff Sping 2014 Collection Review

Clean, simple lines in crisp whites and cool blacks are having their moment on the runway this season. Belstaff does it especially well too; leather and mesh paneling on sharp silhouettes help to script a futuristic and edgy feel for this collection. This spring collection dances the line between young and mature perfectly; the fit of each piece is relaxed but has a sexy detail, whether it’s that the shirt is sheer or the hem high, Belstaff plays well for a diverse audience.

You know what makes this collection, and house, even cooler? The creative director, Martin Cooper, is from Columbia, South Carolina! Better yet? My yoga teacher’s husband grew up with him and they remain best friends.

Joseph Spring 2014 Collection Review

It’s a new take on the 90’s and the leisure suit. Sly mesh paneling, white minimalist perfection and silk and satin like no ones businesses all create a strong 20th century vibe. Relaxed cuts and monochromatic patterns all really work every from of “leisure”; you can drink your wine by the tennis courts but still look like the bombshell you are while doing it. This collection manages to hold on to a sort of luxurious athletic look; Adidas style sandals paired with oversize clutches, patent leather pieces and incredible cut out detailing step up the luxurious aspect of the collection. And although this collection is cohesive, it is still versatile; in the colors, in the textiles themselves and in the styles of the fabric. Sequins make an appearance and are all grown up in sultry tank tops under sheer shirts and dresses, and even a luminescent eggshell makes an appearance in a suit of its own. This collection pays homage to the 90’s by reinventing it; maybe the fashion would have been better if this is what it had looked like to begin with.

Sunday Style on Monday: Charleston

My parents and my best friend, Marissa, came up to visit my twin and I this past weekend. It was lovely being able to see my favorite people in the universe and it was even more lovely to go on a day trip to Charleston! My parents have gone for their anniversary but Marissa, Alex and I had never been. More than anything, we were all just excited to explore such a beautiful city and spend time together.  We ate some delicious food and ice cream, became friends with a couple horses, viewed some cemeteries, saw some babes.

It was a good time.

Willow Spring 2014 Collection Review

As if the sheer, polka dot minimilistic madness could end. .Smooth, silky satin’s, sultry, straight lines and the perfect sheer paneling coupled with strategically placed fabric blocking make Willow one of the best collections I have seen thus far. Elegance and edge couple together to form a delicate dance that’s only enriched by perfect neutrals in interesting textures. Body suits and dresses that drape perfectly are accented by the ideal plunging neckline, revealing a little while still keeping the fun of imagining what lies below. Asymmetrical shirts and dresses are accentuated by sharp shoulders in asymmetrical hemmed cardigans in stark white and blacks. This whole collection is laid back, sexy, avant-garde goodness, and the last look surely doesn’t end on a bad note. A gunmetal gray biker jacket is accented with the perfect holographic silver on the lapels and is worn with a holographic bra and bodycon skirt. Willow is the perfect addition to the amazing shows at Fashion Week.

Ain’t Laurent Without Yves

It’s that time when change seeps into your skin and crawls into your lungs. She’s heavy and dark and menacing, even though she’s filled with the promise of new beginnings. It’s deceiving; change is the only constant in this life, yet we feel like we are weighed down in the patterns we’ve formed  for ourselves. We let the idea of creating a new identity seep into the wispy cracks of our minds, and we leave it there until we have a bitter tomorrow. This unforeseeable crevice in the back of our head fills with all the notions of the unknown that we are too weak to handle. Instead of dealing with the unseen parts of our future, we hide in the stagnant remains of our souls that we claim to be familiar with. We cover ourselves in darkness as a means of escaping the unknown, slipping on our highest heels in a vain attempt at getting closer to the divine. Oh, if only it were that easy…

A Look on the Dark Side

She tried to back away but surely defeat was in her midst; darkness in her immediate future. She could only handle so much, being as frail and fragile as she was, and her breath caught in her throat as she stepped away in a vain attempt to outrun her stalker. It’s cool hand laid its kiss on her cheek and immediately she was falling into darkness, it’s bitter embrace tragic and somewhat charming. Death was an alluring enemy, beckoning her with it’s promise of eternal silence, yet she had wanted to find an escape; she had wanted an out. She would get it eventually, but on that All Hollows Eve death had chosen her as his lover for the night, draping her in a cloak of darkness for the evening.  She was his princess in her midnight black dress and her wood soled Deandris, she was fit to be his one and only ally for the holiday. His chilling breath whispered in her ears as he led her around the graveyard. Only time could tell what the night would hold..

The constant rhythm of her heels was the only sign of her sly approach. She was as cunning as she was sultry; her smoking eyes would leave you breathless before you had a chance to run from her whip. She was a creature as free as the night, stalking men like they were nothing more than toys for her hearts amusement. Her lips curled in sheer satisfaction when the object of her so called “affection” was finally in her grasp, her bell like laugh ringing in your ears for days. Her red lips would whisper your name and her eyes would stalk you as you tried to escape a fight with her. She was as strong as she was beautiful. Her deception was cruel, for even in leather, her sleek strength could outmaneuver that of any man. She was a woman who would leave you wishing for more, the only memory you could hold onto was how she managed to make you hate and love her simultaneously; and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Menswear Monday; Twisted Classic

After trying to figure out how to make my Monday post less monotonous, I decided I would turn to my well dressed gentlemen friends for some inspiration. After a couple tweets and texts, I decided my friends Nolan and Alex were a solid fit!

Nolan

I met Nolan through some of my friends in Issues about a year and a half ago, he is a freshmen at Berry College where he’s studying music bussiness. Nolan is the kind of guy who shines; people are naturally pulled towad him  Not only does Nolan have a killer smile, but he has a huge heart and is one of those people who will succeed in whatever he decides he wants to pursue. Nolan is always dapper; whether it’s in a button up gingham shirt and jeans, or a band tank top, Nolan has a firm understanding that you wear the outfit, the outfit does not wear you.

“I pretty much throw on whatever comes to mind. I’m more of a mix of classy and casual. When I walk out of the door, i want people to see that I care about the way i look. Black, white, grey and blue are my everyday colors; they describe my feelings and help show off my personality. Button up shirts and sweaters are my favorites but I like throwing on a tee shirt on lazy days. I study music at Berry College, and I hope to let my style grow as I travel and become more educated with musican’s around the world”.

Nolan’s firm grasp and understanding of fashion and how an appearance can make a difference is a sure mar that he will stand out and make his mark on the music industry.

Alex

A common thread that ties both Nolan and Alex together, besides dressing well, seems to be their love for music. Currently the merch man for The Chariot, Alex is about to head out and help sling merch for their last tour ever. It’s incredibly admirable, in my humble opinion, to see people who dress well when they tour. I can only imagine that sleeping in a van with upwards of 5 other people while living on the road for months at a time, can take personal hygiene and personal style and throw it out the window. It’s always refreshing to go to a show and see a guy wearing something other than another bands tank top and some week old sweaty jeans. Alex definitely seems to hold the same perspective when it comes to touring in style. I asked him a few questions about what he wears on and off tour, his celebrity style crush and more.

Breathing Fashion: What do you wear on tour vs off tour?

Alex: My tour style all depends on the season. For instance, I was just out on the Vans Warped tour and the consistent 100 degree weather led me to mostly wear whatever t shirt I had (if it wasn’t too hot) and some thrift store, cut off khaki shorts. Summer is all about simplicity in style. I live in Nashvile, TN so my style wouldn’t change all that much in the summer, with the exception of the addition of short sleeve dress shirts. I am about to leave for a tour in October and rather than go with my normal “tour” look, I’m going to try to keep it as high class as possible, incorporating lots of different jackets with Oxford shoes and button ups from some of my favorite stores including H&M.

BF: Where’s your typical shopping destination?

A:My favorite place to shop would have to be H&M. It provides a bit of a more affordable alternative to other stores I like to go when I have a bit more money like J. Crew. But I’m not afraid of clearance racks or thrift stores. I find the Old Navy clearance rack can provide a guy with all the plaid button ups he could want. If you’re looking for nice shoes, check Goodwill first then get some shoe shine!

BF:How would you describe your style?

A: I would describe my style as the touring professional. I love dressing up and wearing things that are as classy as possible, but you shouldn’t  be surprised when you see a couple patches added to my jacket or tattoos poking out from my shirt sleeve.

BF: If you could dress like any male celebrity, who would it be and why?

A:  if I could dress like any celebrity, I’d have to say Jake Gyllenhaal. He has my type of look down. Always looking clean, but you know there is some edge to him, whether its that great beard he grows or his minor threat shirt you see him wearing occasionally.

PS: Columbia folks; the Chariot will be playing their first show of their last tour EVER on October 10th at New Brookland Tavern. Atlanta folks, the last day of their tour is at the Masquerade on November 19th.

I’m glad I know such fashionable men, i would definitely dress like these two if I was a lad, for now I’ll just take a lesson from their style.

Structure

I crave comfort. I crave stability. i crave understanding and knowing and I crave being at the right place at the right time.. I crave a comforting voice. I crave love. I crave knowing that my bed will be there when I get home. I crave knowing that there is structure to my life and my day. I crave routine.

But this constant craving for comfort and structure can be overwhelming in a life where nothing is ever quite comfortable or structured. Life is quick and she is hectic. She will break you, only to softly lay you out and glue you together again. So instead of wearing things that suffocate and embrace me to my bitter breaking point, I am living in the clothes I want my life to reflect. I am living in structure; I am living in a glistening embrace of colors; I am living in something that whispers that I am a manifestation of the stars and the universe. I am living in a shelter for my soul.

I am living in fabric that wipes my heart clean. I am living in lipstick that clings to me like secrets. I am living in what makes me feel like power personified.

I am living in lips as blue as my heart is calm. I am living in the Northern Lights. I am living in shoes that raise me higher than what I desire.

What does your clothing say about your life?

What to Wear Wednesday

It’s the end of August which means Fall starts in about three weeks and that means pumpkin everything, colorful leaves, beanies and all sorts of change. I’m excited for the weather to get colder, but I know I need to take in the last few weeks of sunshine and warm weather.

I’ve been loving holographic prints with white, I love how it’s so clean and modern, and I honestly want to wear that trend on everything. I love that this look is slightly 90’s but with a sexy, urban feel.

When the leaves change, and the temperature raises the skin on the back of your neck, fall has arrived. She kisses you on the cheek and leads you into the closest coffee shop, engulfing you in her sweet perfume. She’s soft and delicate and she always has an air of change around her. She will dress you in striped sweaters and the perfect jean, and when it’s time to jump in piles of leaves, she will slip you into your wooden soled boots. With your cheeks as red as your lips, and your wind whipped hair, you saunter back home, holding onto your bowler hat and smiling because you know that every day with Fall is a new adventure.

Sunday Style: Soft Spots

It’s been a fun weekend filled with seeing friends from school who I’ve missed. I spent the day today drinking coffee, eating pancakes with friends, going to yoga and as of right now, watching the VMAs. I’m more than ready to throw these jeans on with a chunk knit sweater and some ankle boots. I’m so excited it was a mild summer, but I’m also excited for the chilly Fall ahead.

Snuck my roommates cat into a couple photos. Marceline is the cutest.

First Day of Fourteenth Grade

Today was my first day of classes, and I had to find the perfect outfit to wear. I only had one class today, since I’m taking three online, and I wanted to find the perfect mix of “don’t mess with me” and “please buy me coffee if you’re in line in front of me”. I don’t want to scare anyone away, but I don’t want to look basic either.I ended up wearing a silk tee shirt, some Carven inspired shorts, my quilted bag and my combat boots.

What I’ve Been Wearing Wednesday

I’ve officially moved into my house, installed wifi and gotten pretty settled and this means regular blog posts once more! It’s silly, but when I don’t post I feel like a mother neglecting her child.

Anyway, I have been really obsessed with tight, cropped tees and tanks with my little quilted bag and some sandals. I’ve been dying because of the constant war between rainy, mucky, disgusting days and hot, humid, blaring sun days. It’s been raining like there’s no tomorrow, and it’s followed by MAYBE one day of real sun. It’s hard to dress well when it’s hot and wet outside; I usually just go for outfits that look good layered.

I love hot pants, but when I have to walk around campus I make sure to tie a patterned button up around my waist.

I need to invest in a “Celfie” tee as well as these amazing hot pants. I can’t wait until it’s cold enough for leather jackets!! Also I love these sandals, just chunky enough!

Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2013 Couture Review

This collection is taking couture into the new age. Sexy, slinky numbers, structured blazers a la Balmain, navel exposing necklines and skirts that resemble belts are all staples that are woven into the sexiest couture show to date. A neutral color pallet of blacks, tans, white and icy blues, feed into the sultry and exposed vibes. Leather and satin add some sheen and glamour to this bodycon collection, and stand out pieces like a gauzy number over a cutout body suit really separate this collection from any other couture collection. Vauthier’s slinky dresses are glamorous and sexy with beautiful details like thigh high slits and bustier tops. Cut outs and matte blacks and whites take a sexy Herve Leger sort of approach by leaving little to the imagination. It’s interesting really, how in the colder months it’s easier to be sexy; a shorter hem with a peep of thigh is unexpected when the temperature drops. It won’t be hard to turn heads in the autumn months if you’re wearing an Alexandre Vauthierr piece; sexiness isn’t seasonal.

Helmut Lang Resort 2013 Collection Review

Sheath dresses, boxy tank tops, and loads of the most buttery leather all come together to form the perfect boyfriend inspired resort collection. Numbers in jet black leather are paired with soft-as-rose-petal cotton. The marriage of the textures create a sultry edge in a masculine silhouette, and details like snakeskin ankle boots and quilted collars add interest to the monochromatic looks.  Color blocking is done to the nines, and blazers with thin lapels are refreshing in the cool, effortless, edgy style Lang so easily creates. Marbling details on simple dresses adds a pop of pattern to a neutral color pallet, and the classic blazer/dress pant combo feels edgy and modern with cropped cigarette style pants. Thigh high slits, cropped pants and leather detailing all make this collection unexpectedly edgy and feminine. This resort collection is a definitely a new twist on a typical resort collection, but it definitely proves one thing; black is not seasonal.

What I’m Wearing; Tulips

Although I wish I could cloak myself in a robe of tulips, I can’t. I can do the next best thing though and dress myself in floral print and tulip skirts in warm, happy colors. I saw this beautiful faux tweed tulip skirt at H&M and was so excited when it fit like a glove. I paired my skirt with a cropped, dainty, floral print top and some delicate gold jewelry. I grabbed some Vince Camuto flats and a quilted chain bag from Zara to finish the look.

A Wee Update

Breathing Fashionistas,

It’s been a whirlwind of a summer, hasn’t it? Between going back and forth from Columbia, getting this site going, modeling for friends, shopping for the new house and getting ready for the cruise, my days have flown by! I’m not complaining by any means, the last month of bumming it has done wonders. I’ve been going to Ashtanga yoga classat least four times a week (I try to go more than that), and I’ve been doing my best to spend time with my family and friends. Anyway,  I wanted to catch you all up on some shoots I’ve been doing! I had the pleasure of modeling for No Contenders photography, and I had my makeup and hair done by the lovely ladies of Salon Modello in Atlanta.

I’ll be having more photos from this shoot soon, so stay tuned!

The next shoot was a collaboration between my lovely friend Brianna and her clothing line Moonsail, El Bambino and my new friend Kelsie of Salvation Photography!

More photos from both shoots coming soon!

Elie Saab Couture 2013 Collection Review

Elie Saab is easily the new age king of couture. His sheer, beaded numbers draw eyes from fashion loving fiends and red carpet vultures alike, and with good reason. Saab has found his niche in couture dresses that create a strong, sultry woman by slipping her into a dress that could only come to her in a dream. Striking colors are matched with intricate beading that accentuates the woman’s figure with cinched waists and plunging necklines.Saab creates the ultimate woman by draping her in gowns made of stars and woven with star dust; above all else he manages to cloak each and every lady he dresses in a physical manifestation of their inner beauty. Saab’s fairy tale dresses are beyond anything Cinderella could imagine, but also better than anything in her wildest dreams. Maybe a princess isn’t exactly fit to wear such a dress, but instead a queen; a woman who isn’t afraid to make a statement and show off her beauty and her soul.

The Only Three Outfits you’ll ever need for the Beach

It’s obvious that the beach is singing my name, isn’t it? That’s not typically something I say, I typically like the forest and not so much sandy beaches. But seeing as I’m going to be sailing the seas with the Mexicans (my family), I can’t get my mind off the luxurious shorelines that call my name. The real question on my mind, for obvious reasons, is what will I wear!?

Sunrise

Throw on your pearly whites and some bright fiery oranges to watch the sunrise on your favorite island. The soft breeze of the early morning is paired perfectly with the warm red on your lips and cheeks, and the hand your holding is pretty warming too. The rising sun shines brightly on your gold nails and your pristine white Jeffrey Campbells and it brightens your disposition even more. How can you be upset in such a perfect paradise?

 Daytime

The hot, blaring summer has to be tamed with soft neutrals  in warm tones. Grab your Deandri shoes, and your Celine purse to hit the beach and you’ll be the hottest thing besides the sun. Your fresh sunnies protect your delicate eyes from those pesky rays, but don’t dismiss the cute boys you watch as you sip your daiquiri. Your tan lines may be a little crazy from your striking Herve Leger suit, but you don’t mind people staring, and why would you? Even under the shade of your umbrella you’e still the best eye candy on the beach.

Sunset

You chase away the day with the sultry We Are Handsome bikini and the perfectly underrated NARS lipstick. You already know that the sun setting just means the night’s starting… and the fun is about to begin. Turn up the heart in your Jeffrey Campbells and nix the straw hat for something a little more seductive. Your day has been ravishing and fabulous and your night’s about to be as hot as the temperatures you had to endure. Good thing you’re prepared for anything and  will  turn every head you can in the process.

Chanel Fall 2013 Couture Collection Review

If there’s one thing Karl Lagerfeld manages to do in each and every Chanel collection it is weave each piece together through classic Chanel cuts and tweed. Although this collection is irresistibly Chanel, it is also irresistibly modern with its structured jackets and thick low slung belts. Some looks are closer to the classic image of Chanel; clean, square cut, chic tweed. Some looks are more modern; low, plunging necklines and sheer and airy blouses paired with a tweed jacket in revamped grays. Structured, pointed shoulders and dresses in tiled, shimmering hues are just different enough to leave one’s mouth agape, but keep one’s eyes pealed for more. The latter half of the collection evokes everything from futuristic, space age themes to Renaissance tones. Soft, clingy fabrics bring a touch of sex appeal to a classically conservative house and Karl Lagerfeld’s vision is made all the more refreshing.

Tee Shirt and Jeans

Happy Sunday, one and all. I wasn’t feeling my best after celebrating a friends 21st yesterday, so I took it easy today, throwing on this silk tee and bright cigarette jeans. I spent the day with my sister and mom, buying a mattress for next year and shopping for the house!

I think it’s interesting that most people have a comfort zone that revolves around tee shirts and jeans. I have an incredibly hard time wearing plain denim, as that’s OUT of my comfort zone. It may be a fear of blending in, and not feeling like myself, but wearing plain blue jeans makes me feel extremely uncomfortable and I stopped wearing it years ago. I have jeans and tee shirts that are different, an interesting texture or pattern, something that appeals to the eyes and when I’m feeling lazy, or sick, that’s what I go to when the weather is a bit warmer!

Woman Crush Wednesday: Miranda Feneberger

It’s the last week of Woman Power Wednesday and I had to end it on a high note! I chose the owner of High Voltage Blog, and one of my favorite people.

Miranda Feneberger is not only one of the most incredible, multii-talented, passionate women I know, but she is one of my best friends. There are very few people out there whose talent follows each of their various passions and Miranda is one of those people. Whether she ends up as a surgeon or a film maker or a screenwriter, Miranda is going to make a tremendous impact in whatever field is lucky enough to have her. Always at the peak of  her sporty grunge style, Miranda and her perfect front bangs are always on the cutting edge of her current favorite trend whether it’s vintage tanks or thick, chunky sweaters. Miranda is one of those girls who could wear sweatpants and a tee shirt and still look effortless and chic, like she should be in some underground, indie French film.

I asked Miranda a few questions about her style, future and blog!

Breathing Fashion: What’s your definition of style?

Miranda: Style is a difficult thing to define because it really does mean something different to everyone. I think it’s the things that we do that no one else could recreate. Anyone could buy an outfit straight out of a magazine and wear it but style is those little touches that we add to make things our own. Adding your favorite jacket, listening to a song that gets you really pumped up, secretly wearing your favorite underwear… that kind of thing. First question and I’m already talking about underwear.

BF: How would you describe your personal style?

M:I think my personal style is pretty much split between being as comfortable as possible and also trying to look semi-cute. I’m a big fan of jackets. I usually wear a jacket or a cardigan of some sort with everything. I’m all about the casual look. I pretty much rely on January Jones and Jessica Alba for inspiration because they always look effortlessly adorable. The boyfriend jeans and a v-neck thing is my favorite though you can pretty much always catch me in leggings. Ideally, the look I go for is kind of a north east collegiate/classic English/Ralph Lauren-meets- Cruel Intentions thing. Whether or not I get there really depends on the day.

BF: Where do you hope you’ll be in 10 years?

M: In ten years I’m hoping to be working on my residency in a hospital. I love the arts and I can’t get enough of ’em, but I really love the medical world too. I’m split right down the middle. Hopefully I’ll be in a hospital somewhere up north (or maybe even abroad) looking at some guts. Only kidding (sort of), but I’d like to work in a hospital in ten years. I’ve always loved the environment of them. I think it can be a really hopeful place if you make it one.

BF: How would you describe your blog?

M: My blog has really evolved over the years. I just realized it but this month is the three year anniversary of it’s little life. I kind of touch on a bunch of subjects, and this year my good friend Kate joined me and has been my beauty/fashion correspondent. I’ve never seen myself as particularly on trend or anything so I love getting her insider info. I like to write about movies and art and music and that kind of thing, but it really is just what I’m loving at the moment, uncensored.

BF: What’s your first memory of us being friends?

M: Oh man I don’t know, you kind of just were there, I can’t imagine not knowing you. I’m useless

Chloe Resort 2014 Collection Review

This collection is the perfect antithesis to the Fall and Spring collections of earlier this year. Oversize, clean lines, a slight 60’s vibe and some vibrant colors all scream “resort” in the best way possible. Clare Waight Keller knew exactly what she was doing when she crafted this collection; although most looks may be considered conservative and simple, there is definitely not a lack of personality. With the perfect mix of soft and structured and the perfect combination of color and neutrals, Chloe is definitely having a winning season. Wide legged pants, structured jackets and soft lace accents create an ethereal vibe throughout each look. This collection is both effortless and beautiful in the most avant-garde way.

Carven Resort 2014 Collection Review

Carven is one of my favorite houses, that much is evident. But just because i love a house doesn’t mean I love every aspect of every collection. As a darker soul I tend to appreciate fall and winter collections more so than any other. This seems to be the case with this collection as well. The patterns and prints of Carven’s Resort collection are perfect and subtle, but the sunglasses completely rectangular shape doesn’t seem to compliment the rest of the look. Some of the off the shoulder dresses don’t quite seem to mesh with the silhouette or the texture of the piece they’re paired with .  This collection overall, however, is still classically Carven. Somehow whimsical and grown up at the same time, the pieces manage to be structured and delicate which seems perfectly refreshing for resort. Carven also manages to show how color blocking is still relevant and alive, if done well.

Collection Review: Spice Girls Style

On my way home from Atlanta I decided to reminisce and listen to the Spice Girls. I’m not even ashamed to say it, but there are few bands that I love more than The  Spice Girls themselves. The ultimate girl power, fashion forward, band of their time, the Spice Girls each had their own flavor going on. I loved Sporty Spice growing up, I even had her in barbie form. I loved all the toys of the Spice Girls at Toys R Us, they were so fabulous. Nowadays my favorite is easily Posh Spice, also known as Victoria Beckham. She’s absolutely incredible.

The Spice Girls were not only a force to be reckoned with in the music world, but also a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world. Maybe a bit TOO over the top, but they were British after all, and it was the 90’s.

Who are your favorite 90’s musicians?!

Summertime Sadness

Even though I don’t feel sad at all, I don’t think it’s possible to NOT listen to Lana Del Ray when the weather is  (usually) so beautiful out. It’s somewhat dreary here in Atlanta but that doesn’t stop me from imagining my fabulous tropical get away and picking out bathing suits for it. For my grandmas 80th birthday we surprised her with a cruise that all my family is going on. My parents, sister and I all live in Georgia, but the rest of my mom’s side is in Mexico, so the fact that we are ALL taking a trip together is the highlight of my incredible summer. I am so blessed to have such incredible cousins with wives I adore, and although our family is relatively small I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so proud of my Mexican heritage, and although it only goes a few generations back, growing up speaking Spanish and eating Mexican food every day has allowed me to identify with such a lively country and culture.

My aunt ordered a singing telegram to deliver the news of the cruise to my grandma, and my family and I gathered around the computer to witness it all through skype. My fabulous grandma took the news like a champion and it was easily one of the funniest things I’ve seen;  a giant Mexican parrot spray gold silly string all over my grandma just to sing to her about all the memories my mom and aunt had growing up. That video call made me 1000x more excited to see my family and spend a couple weeks with them staying up too late, basking in the sun and living up to the Mexican stereotype by dancing all night.

Cruises with the family are the number one excuse to splurge on bikinis, beachwear and cute yoga-wear. Here’s what I’m lusting over.

More Jeffrey Campbell’s and striking swimsuits that work with my small bust, all paired with the perfect hat.

Happy summer,

XXX,

Gabriela

Woman Power Wednesday: Kate Foster

I’m so excited to announce a new series I’ll be doing every Wednesday of June; Woman Power Wednesday! I’m so lucky to know such incredible women who are making their marks on the fashion world and taking it by storm, and decided to let all my readers know about them too. The very first lady I’m featuring is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Kate Foster is currently a beauty intern at Marie Claire magazine, and she is definitely one of the most striking people I’ve met. Kate is the kind of girl who was born in the wrong decade; destined to be born in the 50’s Kate’s the pin up girl who’s been plopped into the wrong place and the wrong time. Never one to blend in, Kate’s style is amazing and inspiring not only because of her sense of aesthetic but also because of how well she dresses for her insanely beautiful curves. I asked Kate about her internship, her own personal style and any advice she has to aspiring interns. Read on for more from the beaut herself!

So, I’m a beauty intern at Marie Claire. It’s DEFINITELY not as glitzy as you’d think, but it’s even more rewarding than I ever expected. You know those images you see in magazines with lipsticks cut up or nail polishes spilled to show the color? I assumed those were just stock images, but my main job at Marie Claire is to order those products in from different companies and take them to the studio to get photos taken. I spend almost the whole day in the beauty closet, which is pretty much beauty heaven: every lipstick, moisturizer, or hair product you could imagine. I keep the closet organized and neat, and keep track of what’s new. I also open all the packages that come in, which is fantastic – I get to see just about every product before it comes out!
My favorite part about the internship is definitely seeing and trying out new products. It’s pretty cool when, say, a great new fragrance comes in, and since I know about it ahead of time, I can get it the second it comes out! Also, I’ve heard about some pretty epic beauty sales at the magazine, where we sell everything for a buck or two and donate the money to charity. I hope there’s one while I’m interning, because I would love to stock up – can you even imagine?
I really think what I’ve learned about myself and my advice for others kind of go hand in hand. I’ve learned so much about the beauty and magazine industries, and how to succeed while interning. I think one of the most important things I’ve learned is to do whatever you can to make editors’ and higher-ups’ lives easier. Use Google before asking a silly question, reorganize the closet without them having to ask, find extra products that fit with a story before they have to go looking for it. Also – and this especially pertains to beauty – the industry can feel very small sometimes. It’s so important to be nice to PR people or company owners, because you really are constantly asking them for favors and products. Finally, a positive attitude goes really far. I don’t think editors or assistants would feel like they could depend on me if I was always grumpy about doing my job! I heard this quote one time, something like, “when talent fails, hard work thrives.” I think the key to getting ahead at a magazine is definitely being willing to work hard and get your hands dirty, and hope that it’ll pay off. Two of the girls in the department started off as Marie Claire interns before they got their jobs!
So, moving on to fashion. I’ve always adored playing with makeup and clothes, and once I began to love writing, around the age of 9, everything kind of clicked. I guess I picked up a magazine one day and I was like, “WOAH. I can write about the pretty new dresses on the runway?!” My dreams really haven’t wavered since then.
My style is incredibly inspired by the 1950s. I’d say it’s mostly girly and retro with a hit of edgy, punk flair. Give me a cutesy dress with a peter pan collar and a studded leather jacket and I’m a happy gal. I also love to incorporate the vintage look because I think it really works for my body. One of the reasons I’ve always wanted to get into magazines is to help change the way the industry projects body image. Instead of making a zillion looks for teensy girls, designers and editors should really be using their power to create looks for every shape and size! For example, 1950s-inspired clothes makes me feel and look like pin-up girl. What could be better than that?!
In five years, I hope to be in a permanent position in the beauty, fashion, or editorial department of a major magazine – a position in which I could expect to rise up the ranks. That would be the best!

Burberry Prorsum Resort 2013 Collection Review

If there’s one omen in this collection, it’s this; below the knee is the new mini. There’s no denying it; Burberry has embraced the new hem for the season and done it remarkably well. The fitted silhouette is still feminine and alluring because of the textures, sheen and lace detailing that are added to each piece. Instead of looking overtly mature, Christopher Bailey has created the perfect summertime look that’s easy, sexy and natural. The  sheer fabrics make this collection perfect for summer; the lace knicker-showing skirts are sultry without being over the top showy and the length makes them lust worthy for even the most conservative Burberry Prorsum fan. The brocade patterns and classic trench-coat accents keep the Burberry theme throughout the entire collection. Young and vibrant, this collection was created for the girl who you can’t stop thinking about. Bailey has done it again, delivering not what we want, but what we NEED for Resort 2013.

What do you think about this collection?!

Black is the New Black

Black is dark and sexy and edgy. It is the color of strength and it repels negativity. To me, there is nothing sexier than a guy who wears black well, a little rough around the edges but with a smile that melts what you have of a heart. A man who can take care of himself can take care of me, and a man who can dress himself well can also probably pick out a decent gift for me when it comes time for birthday presents.

You don’t need to be extravagant to dress well, gents. Some fitted pants. a loose tank top and a pair of sturdy leather shoes and my heart is yours.

Elie Tahari Resort 2014 Collection Review

A classic, structured collection that’s perfect for the summer, Elie Tahari’s Resort 2014  is exactly what I crave after seasons of loose silhouettes. The silhouette is redone; with longer hems and looser fits, but it is all edge thanks to the structure maintained. The color pallet of charcoal,  navy, white, black and pale lime green all compliment the simple aesthetic. The sheen of the leather paired with the matte fabrics works perfectly, and adds another element to this stunning collection.

Memorial Day Menswear Monday

Happy Memorial Day to all my fellow Breathing Fashionistas! Although the holiday itself is over, I still wanted to post a little something in honor of America. Although this is a holiday to honor all those who are serving, or have served, our country, I decided I would honor an incredible American menswear designer.

Tom Ford immerses himself in creating the perfect gentlemen. He uses clothing as his medium to construct the most impeccably dressed man he can create,  His incredible tailoring is what allows to make each look so powerful, and so flattering.

What do you think of the silhouette and style Ford creates?

Sunday Style: A Little Darkness

Happy Sunday, one and all!  I officially consider it summer since I thought today was Monday and yesterday was Sunday. Today has been simple and exactly what I needed. I woke up, went to the gym, relaxed a little bit, spent some time sipping my iced Americano and spent an evening with some wonderful friends. It was the full moon yesterday, and there was a very strong sense of craziness. Bad drivers, weird feelings…typical full moon. I’m glad today was a little more relaxed than yesterday was!!

What I wore:

I read the perfect Alexander Wang quote today, “Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing”

What do your off days say about you?

What I Wore: Bikes, Swans and Spikes

I spent the other day with one of my best friends, Miranda of highvoltageblog.wordpress.com, and we ended up snapping some photos after spending some time at the bookstore, where a pretty interesting thing happened. Miranda and I had been sitting at Barnes and Nobles, one of our favorite places to escape, when a man I was next to started talking to me. He brought up the fact that he liked my outfit; how I had constructed it with the contrasting textures, how I had broken up the harsh line of the boot with a thick pair of socks. He went on to explain how he looked for the same sort of aesthetic when he was doing his job of remodeling houses. This went on, for perhaps a little too long, and after thanking him, smiling, and him wishing me luck in my fashion journalism endeavors, I went back to reading(I think it was Classy by Derek Blassberg). And then, to my astonishment, he said one of the most degrading things anyone has ever said to me.. “It’s funny, I would be horrified if you dated my son, but I appreciate how you dress.. I need to think about why that is”. I’m 99% sure I smiled through it, looked down, and tried my best to not laugh and/ or cry. Miranda and I left shortly after, we were talking about what had just happened, and it was shocking that someone would say that. I couldn’t tell if he was trying to compliment me or what, but it’s interesting that someone who knows nothing about me could be so crass. And although it was hurtful, that was exactly it; he knew nothing about me, so why should I take offense to someone who’s so quick to judge me solely by what I wear? I let it go, wished him well, and hope he learns you can’t say whatever you think.

Ann Demeulemeester Fall 2013 Collection Review

She’s easily the queen of soft, ethereal, witchy vibes. Ann Demeulemeester undeniably creates a sort of juxtaposition in each look that draws one in. Demeulemeester’s pieces are so carefully composed of light and airy pieces that look perfect when paired with tougher, glossier, and darker, material like leather. The sort of brush stroke type ombre, along with a fringe, that she incorporates into the collars of her pieces is such a great idea; both simple and beautiful. Floor length, wispy, button down shirts paired with black, lace up, calf high leather boots form the sort of contrast that  reminds me of the Romans.  The perfect bowler hat is added to each look, and in some special cases, so is a leather belt that resembles a harness more than anything else. Harnesses, along with many other forms of innerwear as outerwear  are one of the trends Demeulemeester has been doing long before anyone else. This is the ultimate collection for a girl who likes to test the boundaries of the seasons; black in summer, white in fall. This sort of look caters to the love of breaking rules, and what a beautiful love to have that is.
